Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi all! I am considering starting Ogres as a second fantasy army.
I was thinking of getting a smallish ary to start with to see if I really like them. With that in mind the idea is to base it around the battilion boxset to save money.
Here is the starter list I thought of. Let me know what you think and how it could be improved. Would it be competitive at this points value?
6 gnobbler trappers=48
The idea behind the trappers is they can try and march block, annoy wizards or take/contest table quarters. They could be changed though.
What ya think?
hi, good choice on ogres; they're a fun army, and a great looking one at that (no i'm not implying ogres are goodlooking, but they're nice minis)
i'll comment on your list
use the 2 bodies from the 2 other leadbelchers: make one a standard bearer with the irongut standard and an irongut head, and a bellower with the same arm as a bull bellower, but add a shield on the shoulder, and use the irongut bellower head.
now you have the 4 great weapons left. so you can create 4 ironguts with great weapons, one of which can be a bellower for the second unit if you give him a bull bellower head (if he's carrying a great weapon, he's obviously an irongut) you also have 6 irongut gut plates on the sprue, so that makes it perfect.
here would be the list i'd use with the changes made, you could change some things for a butcher, but at 1000 points, i've found him to be a bit too expensive (+ you won't have to buy a model yet, saving some money ) .i might be a little biased on this since i face dwarfs a lot, but oh well . 3 butchers in a 2000 pts list is where the fun comes in with gut magic :drinking:
all you'll need is the battalion box, a gorger and a bruiser. (you can use regular gnoblars as trappers for the time being)
lonstrider big name
3 ironguts +bruiser
8 gnoblar trappers
total = 998
Thanks, that list looks really good, cost effective to
One question though; are reagular bulls better than ones equipped with la & if? I thought they would be a really good investment. More adaptable. Maybe not.
Following your comments and using the list you have suggested I have altered it slightly.
Hopefully this should work ok
3 Ironguts+bellower+SB+look-out gnob=179 (bruiser here!)
8 gnobbler trappers=48
in my opinion (and opinions differ from person to person) IF are not really worth the points. i know from experience they will almost always be used as an additional hand weapon, and since that option is cheaper, that might be the way to go if you really want extra equipment on your bulls. with additional hand weapon, they'll wipe out horde units easier (e.g. night goblins with only a 6+ AS). i've found the armor piercing rule on the "ogre club only" handier though, and it's free 0:.
you could model them with ironfist, and let your opponent know at the start of the battle what they're actually equipped with (you could use the ironfist as an ironfist, or to represent an additional hand weapon, or can just be an "accessory" if you're fielding the bulls with no extra equipment ).
with that in mind your list still looks good though ;Y
ogres have no combat resolution, so they make up for it in mobility and wounds (impact hits and hopefully flanking things) Like arisen devil stated, I've never seen it to be the ogres benefit to sit back and hide behind the light armor and ironfist. Most decent weapons or units are going to be strength 4 or 5 anyway so your armor save is gone anyway. Bulls are fairly expensive and you can definately use the points elswhere (especially in 1000pts)
i've checked the ogre sprues again, and i was wrong about the combination to make 6 ironguts; you should drop the bellowers on the irongut units, but add a standard bearer to the second unit (you could use a bull banner instead of an irongut banner since you'll never be giving your bulls a banner, so there's no need for difference ). the points are exactly the same, so that works out like a charm
Actually you can make 6 IG's from the Battalion box, 4 regular Ironguts and make the last 2 as standard bearers, then you can give thema regular weapon or combine 2 weapons to make them look big enough to be a great weapon.
Also in my opinion Leadbelchers work better in unit pairs, allowing you to posibly shoot the enemy each turn.
Bellowers are a waste on Iromnguts as if they are fleeing then you are most probably doing something wrong,as Ironguts should be charging and chasing down units.
I disagree about the 1 butcher not doing much in 1k they are deadly as they offer 5 spells per turn and your opponent wil normally have 4 dispel dice at most, they also give you an additional 2 dispel dice and a scroll, otherwise your opponeent will be able to go crazy in the magic phase (had it done to me many times)
