Welcome to Librarium Online!
Okay, s0m3w0n initiated a (Hero Hammer Reborn)discussion about running an army with a full complement of heroes, a large unit of IGs, and a giant.
Based on the ensuing posts, I had the idea of people submitting their lists based on this idea. Whether or not you think such a list is a feasible winner, run with the concept and post the list that you'd build.
Given that I inspired it I guess il start it off. This is a rough concept list not game tested but here....
Grey back pelt
Sword of battle
The tyrant Is designed to run around cleaning up, but going solo. I think that 5 to 5 wounds makes him tough enough to do so and 6 str 6 attacks means he can hold his own.
3 gnoblar theifstones
2nd hand weapon (if needed can drop one gnoblar to make a great weapon)
Just to add magic resistance and punch to the hammer unit.
2 Despell scrolls
Some one to help the tyrant with cleanup, or in desperation range support.
Full command war banner
The "deathstar" the army is built around, supposed to break up the big regiments or possitions of your enemy, and win any fight they get into.
2nd hand weapon
Try and get a flank while ironguts take front if help is needed. Also to break weaker units.
Cause every one needs gnoblars for 50 pts and 25 models you cant go wrong.
March block, harrass, screen or whatever. Another regiment thats just nice to have.
Giants are awsome and are good at disrupting your enemy with terror and also pose a threat if used in combination with a tyrant or something similar
Basicaly a battle plan would be....
Deply guts in center to smash a hole in the enemy line. Other troops are deployed evenly on both sides depending on terrain. Guts put a hole in the line and everything else attacks the leftovers.
I really don't see an ogre list working well this way unless you have another butcher instead of the hunter, that way you can get one butcher buffing the huge unit with either trollguts or toothcracker, while the other one either softens up units with bonecruncher or scares them away with braingobbler+skullmantle.
I also think that to make this work effectively you need to combine MSU with the huge unit, that is to say, drop the giants for smaller units of 3 Ironguts to maneuver around the huge unit and flank charge what it gets stuck into. Giants may hit hard, but I maintain that a unit of 3 guts hits even harder, and still has fear (only slightly less effective than terror).
I know that in the other discussion s0m3w0n stated his preference for fighty characters over butchers, but I still think that you need the gut magic, and magic swords/siegebreaker still makes for a character that can really cause some damage in CC.
Also, if your going to take a Bruiser, I would think that a BSB would really benefit such a massive unit. Even something as expensive as the Dragonhide Banner would be worth it to make an already expensive unit really make sure it packs a punch.
I think such a list can win, at least against someone who isn't expecting it. I have been tinkering with such a list myself, but my personal preference is still for MSU.
If I did the list it would look something like this.
Tyrant: 306 (Goes in the big Gut unit)
Bruiser (BS: 219 (Joins Tyrant in the Gut unit)
Butcher: 180 (Joins Bruiser and Tyrant in the gut unit)
Butcher: 175 (Goes in the smaller Gut unit with the standard+lookout gnoblar)
Sword of Might
7x Ironguts: 386
3x Bulls: 115
3x Ironguts: 179
Standard w/ Lookout Gnoblar
3x Ironguts: 154
3x Ironguts: 154
This list comes out to 2,018 not quite sure what to do about the 18 points, but I think if you were to run a "Deathstar" it could work pretty well with some support from smaller units. As well as the "Surprise! I just killed your warmachines!" that the Gorgers give you. I'd just hate to get hemmed in by terrain with the huge unit of Guts.
"I am the architect of fate!"
I might try that, once or twice id be curious to see if it would work.
I just wish that when considering a list like this, that we were back in last edition. When we could rank off of 4. Then I might even consider a 4x3 formation of guts + Tyrant, BSB, and Butcher. You could then be getting str 6 and 7 impact hits from the charge alone!
"I am the architect of fate!"
I'm still working on my heroes. I'm an admitted light-weight when it comes to OK tactics, so let me overthink it for a while and get back with you.
My question is why worry about ranking with a unit like that...
you have 9 Ironguts with the Tyrant, Bruiser bsb and butcher. Give the bsb a warbanner and the guts the bull standard. Now when you charge you have this. 1 for outnumber, 1 for the bsb, 1 for the warbanner, 1 for the regular standard. With the bull standard you are pretty much guaranteed 3-4 wounds on the impact hits. IF your opponent has 3 ranks AND a standard, You are now 3-4 up on him at the beginning AND he has next to nothing to swing back with. It now boils down to the rest of the wounds dealt. Odds are very much in the ogres favor of coming out on top of the wounds dealt area, so its pretty much a given that the opponent is rolling for Insane Courage.
Just be careful for the @*#$%^ Zeentch spell that makes you roll leadership or DIE..... I came in second in my tourney today thanks to that spell... GAH!!
If you cant beat em...Eat em!
Armies to date:
2500 Ogre Kingdoms
2500 Tomb Kings
1500 Space MArines
That spell isnt tht scary. As tzeench player I can tell you most guys throw it away for red fire. Its only on an off chance it will work and even then you have to use alot of dice to cast it.
This is probably a bit of a crazy list but I saw it somewhere else and thought I should share. Ive only done part of it because I wasnt really sure how to do the rest of the 2000 point list but here is the start at least. And I realised the setup for the tyrant and butcher are similar to demandreds but the butcher can really hit hard this way and this tyrant setup is quite common.
Tyrant- Tenderiser, Wyrdstone Necklace, heavy armor
Butcher- Siegebreaker, Skull mantle
7 Maneaters- Heavy armor and some weapon
The tyrant and butcher join the maneater unit to make one immune to psychology, stubborn and freakin hard hitting unit. Its definetely a super big power unit.
Grand total of 1086 points
