Welcome to Librarium Online!
So do you ever run heroes outside of units. Most armies won't do that in 7th ed. because they're so vulnerable to missile fire and magic. Ogres, however, have realy high toughness, even Butchers. I've used solo Butchers to harass skinks, and it worked pretty well.
Skinks shoot str 3 missiles, needing 6's to wound ogres so that doesn't happen often. Plus, Butchers ignore skink poison, a huge advantage.
What about Hunters? I've never even assembled mine, even though I like the idea of him. I think people get to hung up on using him to shoot. How about putting the bullgut on him and making him US 6 on the charge to negate ranks. That would surprise the crap out of people. I wish there was room for the Bull Gut and Long Strider on him.
The lone Butcher seems like a good idea, those little skinks have the potential to annoy the crap out of an ogre army.
I used to be superbock, if anyone cares.
almost all my heroes start out in units, but mostly leave them after a while. especially my bangstick butcher, because i like to keep on shooting magic missiles on unengaged units and using buffs while my other units are already in combat.
against lizardmen, i almost always field my butchers solo to go skink hunting since they're very good at that as you already pointed out
It really depends on who I am facing. Though I would have to say that for the most part like others have said, my lord and heroes start out in a unit but sometimes leave it as the game progresses.
I would also use hunters if they didn't take up the magic stuff that I want on my Tyrant/butcher, and if they were anywhere as close to useful that a butcher is. That being said, I used one with longstrider in a 1k game with a bruiser against dwarfs. Between his sabertusks being released on warmachine crews, and his 14 inch charge range against thunderers, he did pretty well. I will note however that his harpoon launcher is next to worthless, unless being used against a large target.
"I am the architect of fate!"
actually i mostly did it all of the time... taking out small knight units, small skirmisher units, getting stuck too warmachines, flanking, plus taking out enemy wizards that just left there unit with handguns.
well that when i was starting out ogres but now after a few deaths of my bruiser and butcher i mostly keep them in units
"your the sculpting tool i never had"
It is a pity that you cant have the bullgut and longstrider in the same hunter... You do realize, however, that a hunter with 2 sabretusks = US5. Thats a rank buster.
If you cant beat em....EAT EM!!!
