I've been using the standard sized movement trays for some time now. However, since I typically have a 4 frontage for my units, I usually have on ogre standing off the base and a second ogre on the lip of the base. It's really a pain to move them like this. I was wondering what everyone else used for movement trays. I was also looking at the modular movement trays that GW makes. Here's a link, if you haven't seen it. Games Workshop US Online Store
Has anyone else used these? I see that they're designed with man sized and cavalry bases in mind. How well would these work for large units of ogres (typically 7-? As always, I thank anyone for their help in advance.
Discount sushi isn't just a bargain, it's an adventure
I usually make my own movement trays. It's about 4x's cheaper, looks better, and can be made into any size you want.
Basically all I use is some decent thickness plastic card (I know people that use balsa wood but it's less resilant), left over sprues, and sharp utility knife. Measure the bases you want to set your unit up in make sure to add the thickness of the sprue and cut it with the utility knife. Cut a piece of left over sprue to use as the lip and shave off any parts that stick out. Then Glue it on. I use super glue to attach the spure to the board. I tried Elmers Glue but it didn't hold up. Then textrue the lips of the tray to match your army.
Not only is it cusotmizable but it looks smashing too.
Very good idea kbolster. I am always looking for ways to save money in this hobby. Doesn't sound very hard either. Since I am painting and modelling impaired I need an easy way to do things. Rep for you sir.
Yeah!!! You just doubled my rep!
Hopefully I will get pics of my army soon. It will include the trays I made for my ogres so peole can see how I made mine.
Honestly I've always bought Gale Force 9 bases for all my armies, These come with a magnetic sheet. I take balsa, cut it to size, do the same with the sheet and glue the two together. Its very effective and incredibly cheap, plus, all your bases are instantly magnetized, which is a super plus. I've found that these really don't need a lip to look good either.
You could make your movement trays out of cardboard thats what i always do...
measure then cut stick a magnet to the inside paint the bottom and sides add magnets to your models and boom your done.
Just make sure to add the magnet so the cardboard doesn't warp when painted. The magnets don't cost very much so it;s an inexpensive way for movement trays that don't have models falling off when u move it
I thought I was smart, but apparently people don't like to take advice from beggars.
On of the guys in my local league wrote up (with pics) a little guide to making your own trays with magnetic basing here: WWW.WWHFB.COM :: View topic - Tusks Movement Trays 101 + Pictures updated!!!!!
Might want to go with a heavier 0.080" polystyrene though to hold up against the weight of large Ogres better.
The most expensive part is the light gage steel squares. The purchased ones are nice, but at $5 per 30, you're paying a lot of overhead. If you have a tin snips, metal file, and a little time, you can make the exact same thing for a few pennies each.
with the exception of Gnoblar fighters ive never found movement trays to be at all needed in an OK army. Its not hard at all to keep 3-5 ogres lined up and moved. Even units up to 7 models strong are very easy to move without trays do to the fact that their not fiddely like say girly high elves.

As far as magnetizing goes I bought a ton of cheap small washers and glued them under my bases. I then bought sheet magnets and cut them out to fit in my movement trays. I did this for the Gnoblars only and it seems to work. The plastic Ogres don't need it. Not even for trasnporting unless your taking a bus or something.
