Do you put him in a unit and get him in combat or is he off to the side or behind the units just supporting them?
honestly id keep him to the side because every ogre squad will be better off wid out him. example= iron guts-frontage of 4-12 attacks at 6 or 7 depends on str buff
= bulls-frontage-4-additional wepons-16 attacks
=bulls-frontage4-no equips- 12 attack ) -2 to armorsave
while the butcher would take 3 attacks away from iron guts(not worth it)
1 attack from bulls(cant cast magic)
and taking 1 guy away from getin -2 to save but instead -1
so inconclusion id say NO
XD keep him to the side close to squads so he can buff em up and cause havoc on the enemy XD
hope i helped u out
I'd stick him in a unit. I've limited experience with OK, but Ive found cannon sniping ot be the ogres worst nightmare. Protect your characters whenever you can. You never know when a cannon on a hill's gonna show up to ruin your 'hide behind and support' plan. I think the extra safety of the caster is well worth the loss of 1 attack when the unit charges.
That being said, when you're certain nothing'll hit him if he stays out of the unit, you certainly can let him stride along on his own. Hope it helps.

Usually, I put him in a unit, but if it's a good situation to do otherwise, I'll let him run free. He's great for chasing skinks around as he's immune to poison. It can put those little buggers on the defensive. The only issue is keeping him near enough ogre units for his gut magic to be worthwhile.
It's very conditional, but still, inside units is a lot safer than outside them.
I imagine him not having the 360 sight like most Wizards can would pose a problem.
