Welcome to Librarium Online!
I love taking 3 butchers, but I keep hearing from people at my local shop that 2 butchers and a bsb, or a hunter is so much better.
I personally don't think hunters are worth the points, but what advantages does a BSB give me? By dropping a butcher I go from 8PD + bangstick to 6PD + Bangstick. With 8PD going off on a 3 I should get 5.33 spells + 1 for the bangstick per round, with the scale going from 1 spell to 9(if I'm really lucky, which happens). 6PD gives me 4 + 1 for bang stick with a range of 1 to 7. Basically by dropping a butcher I lose 1 1/3 cast spells on average a turn. Along with 1 DD.
Now adding a BSB obviously let's me reroll break tests. It also gives a unit a better ability to break a rank and file unit head on. Our banners aren't the greatest, but a rune maw or war banner could be helpful. Also, even though he's a BSB he'll survive better and kill better in CC than a butcher. So he gives a slight boost to the CC phase.
Anyone got any different views on the matter?
I was also suggested to that a lone butcher with a hellheart could be a better setup.
Not many people go for hunters.
If you want magic to be effective, stick with three butchers.
If you want to work some of the time, but not as often, go with two and a BSB. Ogres can really benefit from rerolls since they have mediocre leadership and often find themselves losing to static combat res.
As for kills, a butcher can give you that with a magic great weapon.
its really up to personal preferance, 3 butchers are great as long as your opponent can dispell you, remember you can only ever usee two dice.
bsb are weird i used one for ages and the bsb being just the bsb is the only real viable choice, instead put a standard bearer in the unit with the war banner, its a case of go hard or go home.
hunters are cool, but ultimatly ineffective, nobody says you HAVE to take all four heroes.
I only roll 1 die per spell. It usually results in an overwhelming magic phase. Not many people have 6 dispel dice to stop 6 successful ogre spells. Also you have to remember if you get 6 spells off they have to roll at worst better than a 3.
the casting cost still doubles, although our magic is annoying and consistenet at a certain point it becomes usless.
Well you know 6 spells and you have a bangstick, so I've found at any given magic phase I can find a use for 5 out of our 6 spells and the 6th to go off is the bangstick.
Alright... as a new player, I gotta ask eventually....
What's a BSB?
