Welcome to Librarium Online!
I am seeking to diversify the games I play with my Ogre army. I love a mighty bullcharge (with supporting gut magic of course) as much as the next bruiser, but I want to use the element of surprise against familiar opponents in a way straight up ogre armies just can not do with the current rulebook. I am almost finished converting up a 'gnoblar hotpot' to use in the occasional casual game between friends, but while combing through the dogs of war rules, I stumbled upon an interesting idea that might have crossed another tyrants mind in the past; What about using Mengil Manhide's Manflayers?
Scouting, Skirmishing elves with a good save against ranged attacks, good leadership, a solid amount of shots with at least BS 5, and WS4 S5 hth attacks, all poisoned. Plus they love eating their enemies as much as we do. They even have armor! Sure, they can't handle the receiving end of close combat very well, but you can't win 'em all.
Is this a good fit for my ogre army? They offer a lot Ogres are weak in, and I feel like the disruption they could provide might be worth their points. Any solo mage is toast, and they could take out war machines pretty quickly. March blocking. Bothersome shooty units would have a hard time in combat against them, and any unit sent to deal with Mengil would make things easier for the main forces when they get there. Plus, think of when a Gorger arrives.
Does anyone have any thoughts, advice on, or experience using Mengil & friends? Please do tell!
I haven't used them, myself. But, the other Ogre player I play with swears by them. I've played him while he used them and I watched him use them. You're right, they fill a gap that we sorely need filled in the army list. They're hard to kill, they kill everything they go after and they give extra victory points for every unit they run down. When I was playing him, he took out my hunter and his sabretusks with no problem. Then he proceeded to wipe out some more of my smaller units.
