Hey guys, prospective Ogre player here (I love those big lugs, I just can't help ==Myself==)
I've been tinkering with ==My== proposed army and I've been thinking about Hunters. I've got the standard Tyrant and 3 Butchers deal going, but Hunters are easily ==My== favorite of the characters fluffwise. I love the crossbow dealy, sabertusks are neat, and I'd probably make him a long strider with a nifty magic weapon or Cathayan Jet.
Would I be shooting ==Myself== in the foot if I went for 2 Butchers (probably Bangstick and 3 scrolls to be safe) and a Hunter?
As you already know, tenderizing tyrant and 3 butchers is the way to go in tournaments, but when you're not playing competitively, why not? . He's one of the nicest OK models too.
I field him myself occasionally with 2 sabretusks, longstrider and sword of might. He works allright as a flanker (as he's US 7 with his tusks).
When fielding him though, you'd be insane not to use the extra unit of gnoblar trappers available
So if you feel like it, just give him a try - OK is all about fun
Well, well, what do we have here? ^_^
Looks like another fellow Ork (40k) player is checking out the Ogres.
As for hunters, they're the best unit you'll never use.
Well, at least not competitively. It's not that they're bad, and in fact they can be quite useful, but there just isn't any room for them in competitive lists. Depending on your list, you'll need either a 'Tyrant and 3 butchers', or a 'Tyrant, 2 butchers and a bruiser with a battle standard'. The Tyrant is your 'hero killer', the butchers are for the much needed dispel dice and dispel scrolls, and the bruiser is to keep your guys from chickening out early.
Hunters are great for flanking the opponent and firing bolt thrower shots, but neither is strictly 'necessary' for Ork lists, and the other Heroes are. If you're playing a 3000+ game, then by all means go for it, with the longstrider name, sword of battle, and an extra team of gnoblar trappers. Just don't swap out a Tyrant, butcher, or battle standard bearer for him.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Thanks guys, I was afraid of that. I'll give him a few test games but I figure for a competitive build I'll stick with the Butcher trio.
