Basically what the topic title says...
I LOVE Ogre Kingdoms. I have dabbled in all sorts of armies for 40k - Marines, I.G, Witch Hunters, Necrons, Dark Eldar, Chaos and Tau (phew, thats almost all of them!), but OK are my one and only WFB army. I love their models, I love building their models (well, the plastic ones), I love painting them and I love gaming with them.
There is one thing I dont like about them though. Gnoblars. Well in particular, units of them. I dont mind the occasional Luck Gnoblar or just using them as pets in general.
So can an OK army run effectively enough without Gnoblars? Or are they really necessary? I know OK is probably the least powerful army in the game at the moment and have a hard time winning as it is, and I'm fine with that, I play for fun and collect Ogres because they are the best to model/convert/paint. But I dont really want to gimp myself any more than I have to just because I dont like Gnoblars...
Well gnoblars IMO are most effective for taking down giants, which many armies have....because they're so cool, they are usually taken in units of 40 or so, which with their sharp stuff can unleash alot of attacks, although weak they can get enough wound to almost kill a giant, or even kill it all together, well yeah,

Take some if you have a points gap to fill. Admittedly they can be good for tactical uses (i once got beat by a trapper unit sitting in a corner and claiming victory points - so tourney tactics there ).
My mate is looking at Ogres though, and we both agree that more big stuff > lots of little stuff
I am looking to collect OK also and the one thing keeping me from it is having to take Gnoblars. I want to take a bunch of fat dudes and run the table, although from the sound of it I will be run. Oh well, I would love to know how viable a list would be around 1000pts to 1500pts w/out Gnoblars, or at least just one block of 20-35. Thanks!
Armies: 40k: Imperial Guard, Orks Fantasy: Skaven
of course you can win without them, but they are very useful. They're as cheap as you can get! I'd either have none at all (which means no scraplauncher ) or 2 units of 30 ish.
one unit of 24 at 1000 points worked well enough for me
OMG! did you really say that OK is the least effective/powerful army in the game? My good man, you aren't playing the same OK that I am then.
Armies to date:
2500 Ogre Kingdoms
2500 Tomb Kings
1500 Space MArines
On the other hand, I find trappers to be one of the best units an OK army can field. I find the tactical uses of them to be incredibly invaluable. Plus, sharp stuff actually takes stuff out every now and again. Bonus!
My advice is to not use them if you don't like them, however. Your gaming style will just be different from the "tournament army", and there are several ways to skin a gnoblar.
