So I was daydreaming a little bit as I was reading through the OK army book about possible new units for whenever GW revamps ogres.... these were some of the ideas i thought of:
rhinox riders: well, i didn't think of it really, but I think it can go without saying that rhinox riders are a must have in the new army book. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could arm rhinox riders with leadbelcher cannons? That would be CRAZY-intimidating, and you'd be risking double the points+ than regular leadbelchers....
gnoblar cavalry: I think it would be cool if there were a limited (numbers-wise) option to have some gnoblars riding mountain goats... it would be cool to also see a couple of gnoblars trying to tame a wild rhinox-- I would imagine it to be "stupid" as the gnoblars worked hard to steer it in their desired direction...
pit fighters: either as a special/rare choice, a special character, or both i think these guys would be sweet. I'm not sure how much more different they'd be from maneaters though.
ogre whelps: not exactly sure how to fit these in (if they'd be worth the effort) maybe as an in-between unit between bulls and gnoblars? idk
hunter options: I think that the hunter could be made a more viable hero option if he had more "pet" choices. Maybe a mastodon (hydra-like) beast that he controled or cave bears. It seems to me that the army book talks a lot about the different animals that dwell within the ogre kingdoms, so it would be cool to see those being used IMO.
The one thing that i would hate to see in a new army book is an equal amount of gnoblar and ogre units... it would just remind me too much of an orc and goblin army. What do you guys think? Any good ideas for new units/characters?
Lmao, I love the idea of a Leadbelcher on a Rhinox, firing the cannon and flying off backwards Then what? The Rhinox goes nuts!
Gnoblar cav.. interesting. Though on a Rinox, you already have the Scrappy thrower.
Pit fighter could be cool, maybe a cheaper, special, maneater option. Possibly too much like gorgers/Maneaters though, but definitely some cool modelling potential.
Personally i think that bringing in anything between Gnoblar and Ogre size would "spoil" the army too much, the whole idea is to have BIG STUFF!!!
The Hunter has to be one of the best hero choices available in Fantasy (in terms of awesome). Shame GW made such a cock-up of the Ogre hero selections first time round lol. If he could take some monster as an additional rare, maybe... but how about taking up no slots, like the DE assassin? Make him 0-1 per army.
And finally, Rep to you Ive been working on a similar thing with beasts and hopefully this will continue and develop strongly in the Ogre community
You know, that would make for a good PDF file - some fan-made units. Kind of like a segment of what I had envisioned for the LO Campaign before its death. How about goat cavalry, or perhaps sabretusks?gnoblar cavalry: I think it would be cool if there were a limited (numbers-wise) option to have some gnoblars riding mountain goats... it would be cool to also see a couple of gnoblars trying to tame a wild rhinox-- I would imagine it to be "stupid" as the gnoblars worked hard to steer it in their desired direction...I'd make these guys strongly anti-horde-infantry. 3-4 attacks at a decent WS, a cool weapon, plus maybe a weak strength.pit fighters: either as a special/rare choice, a special character, or both i think these guys would be sweet. I'm not sure how much more different they'd be from maneaters though.I'd love to see the OK book go more beast-oriented, in the way the DE one is now.hunter options: I think that the hunter could be made a more viable hero option if he had more "pet" choices. Maybe a mastodon (hydra-like) beast that he controled or cave bears. It seems to me that the army book talks a lot about the different animals that dwell within the ogre kingdoms, so it would be cool to see those being used IMO.Go for another Gnoblar unit (or two) and add a character, say a tribe elder or shaman or champion (oooh, scary). Add to that some new Ogre units, maybe scouting, skirmishing commandos with Rptr XBows (Ogre-sized, of course), and maybe some martial-artist style unit. After all, who's to say they learnt nothing from Cathay? The one thing that i would hate to see in a new army book is an equal amount of gnoblar and ogre units... it would just remind me too much of an orc and goblin army. What do you guys think? Any good ideas for new units/characters?
Just my thoughts. This has given me another idea, which I will be discussing with other Moderators and the like before announcing, since it's likely that this one won't get off the ground either. But for now, a community project could be really cool.
that so funny, the other day I was talking about converting some LB's onto rhinox's. haha.
So what would you like the different "pets" for the hunter to do?
I love the idea of gnobby calvary, I mean orcs get it....Maybe even make them fast calv.
Id like to see more female models. Maybe not as a new unit, but just new models.
also, Gorgers should be able to charge the turn they enter the board.
and Finally, The unit id most like to see would be Gnobby flyers of some sort...Either through some bizarro contraption they built, or some giant beast they tamed. Maybe even give em small template explosives.
I also think that gnobby shamans could be cool.
how about gnoblar SAPPERS? kinda like suicide bombers that would be carrying large amounts of gun-powder on their backs? THAT would really soak up some long range fire from the enemy as they would most likely be scared of walking cannon balls! That could be a helpful unit to draw the fire away from you guts unit. I would imagine them to be pretty expensive and not a rank-file unit, maybe they would just have a unit size of 1-3 or something and cause D3 S 4 hits per sapper when they come into contact with any other base...
i like the idea of pit fighters being slightly weaker but having a better WS.
maybe a unit that was best known for ambushing caravans could take on a skirmishing role among the ogres...but maybe i'm just thinking about the hunter all over again...
Having ogres with bolt throwers would be a cheaper and less risky form of leadbelchers, that would be cool
Also it would be cool if you could arm you bulls units with "rocks" that they could throw (a la siege scenarios in the old rule book) this would give you the potential to have a little range from your normal bulls units and would be a cheap upgrade...
how about a massive and extra dumb ogre that acted as a big stone thrower?
as for the hunter's options:
I like the sabretusks, and for the most part i think they could remain unchanged
i invision a mastodo being a lot like the DE hydra or a Lizzy Stegadon,it would only be like a hydra in the sense that it is a monster that walks in front of the beast-lord that is controling it. As for different functions i guess it could be a close combat BEAST. You would charge it to get some massive compact hits amd it could thrash around and take out rank and file units.
as for a cave bear... i'm not exactly sure how that could be made to fit a different role but it would look intimidating to see a huge bear on a chain being held by a mean ogre.
Yeah, I think it'd be awesome if they developed the cathay aspect of ogres, maybe ogres with scout and cathayan longswords. Actually maybe give hunters scout like their trappers (lol makes me think of bigfoot sneaking up on people) I'm not sure about ogres having too many juicy monsters in their armies, but I can imagine gnoblars catching things and 'taming' them. Then again, they could have a chariot pulled by monsters for tyrants to ride, converted from a great caravan.
A rhinox pulled chariot with for the tyrant with gnobo shooters of some sort on it would be insane.
as for the gorgers, Id take a little bit of randomness for them coming in, to get the charge.
TK Scorps are nasty! and even though they do misfire some times, for the most part they are nasty advesaries.
Rumor has it though that GW is comming out with a new race in the near future.
My money is on it being cathay, which could have some affect on the new ogres (when ever that is).
personaly Id like to see some more stuff with gnobos.
specificly some sort of calvary. Although the sapper idea is a good one.
New spells for the butchers would also be nice. Maybe some sort of new magic missle, that has AoE.
or perhaps a summoning spell where you open a void to the great maw and enemys are sucked in.
I dont really see any benifit to the pit fighters, but maybe I just dont understand.
I love the idea though about giving bulls " Bag O' Rocks" to throw at folks. That would be a great addition. Or throw those bear traps they have.... Id like to see them get some actuall use.
and finally maybe the hunter should be able to upgrade with "camoflauge" which would mean that when he is near tree's or other foliage type terrain he is essentialy invisible if he dosent move, but can still shoot. so if you got him close to the terrain, you could take him off the board, then just wait for people to forget that you put him there, and when they get close he can snipe em.
that would be amazing. Id even say the trapper units could be upgraded with camo.
I think pit fighters would be a neat idea, though from a fluff standpoint, I'd see them as challenge unit.
Consider perhaps: Heavy armor, Iron fist, Killing Blow/Frenzy (probably not both), an elevated WS, and the ability to declare challenges for the entire unit.
It'd be a total slap in the face of all those players that put all their characters in one unit ( lol die Brets! ).
"..and when I wake up/ I imagine being crushed by one/ Imagine it's weight/ It's silence/ The absence of excuse for a havoced life/ And the privalage/ Of a 22 kilometre tombstone" In Flames - Jotun
I like the idea of a mastodon, and have suggested in elsewhere. I think that'd work pretty well as an Ogre chariot... except with the instant kill at strength 7. Just... doesn't seem right.
Or, perhaps a Mountain Goat chariot for Gnoblars? If it's good enough for Thor, it's good enough for Gnobbos.
