In 2000pt games, I have always maxed out my character limit. I usually go with a tyrant with three buthcers for a solid magic and CC duo.
While I was playing around with some list options, I was wondering if other ogre players normally max out their character limits... (being 4 in a 2000pt game).
It seems to me that if I drop a butcher then i'm extremely more vunerable to magic based armies...but with the extra 180 points (or so) I could grab a whole other unit of three ironguts with points to spare. It would help in fielding more units than normal, i would think. And it's not that the butcher's ldrship is helping the unit he's in.... just wondering I guess.
do you usually run as many characters as you can, or have you ever sacrificed a character for other core units? I could see the logic on both sides of the coin, but i'd be interested to hear of some real-life experiences....
3 Butchers and 1 Tyrant/Bruiser is generally the way I go as well. I sometimes do 1 Tyrant/Bruiser, 1 Bruiser [usually as the BSB] and 2 Butchers, but in those cases I always give 2 dispel scrolls to each of the 2 butchers, otherwise there isn't enough anti-magic in the list.
In any case, I always max out the characters when playing Ogres. They're consistently the factor that decides either victory or defeat for me. Without Tyrants/Bruisers you can't stand up to maxed out close combat focused units, and without the Butchers you can't deal with magic focused armies.

I usually run 1 tyrant and three butchers.
I usually give my butchers
1:skull plucker- although- Im think that im not gunna take this any more, as my butchers are rarely in CC
2: Staff of sorcery, Which comes in very handy
3: and one with 2 DS's
although, Ive been thinking of ditching a butcher for a bruiser.
