Not talking about the old White Dwarf gnoblar army list, I mean a list with lots of units of Gnoblar Fighters. Let's say, three small units of bulls, 3 huge blocks of gnoblar fighters (30 each), two units of gnoblar trappers (with the requisite Hunter) and the usual assortment of tyrants, butchers, etc.
So, what do you think?
I think it would depend on who you are fighting, I think this would work very well with Skaven or possibly even O+G. But if you were to play some one like dwarves, or empire or brets, I dont think they would last very long.
I personally take two units of fighters, 24 each and sometimes a unit of up to 22 trappers, I would split them into two units of 11, but I dont have nor really want a hunter.
also, You should try taking 2 scrap launchers.
Yeah. Everybody's telling me I need scrap launchers. The model is hideous and daunting, and I am not sure I like the idea (which seems fairly common) of just strapping a cannon to it's back. I'm going for a gunpowder free list.
My main concern is that Ogres lack the ability to soak up damage, which seems strange as they are big, tough and have lots of wounds... but at going rates, rank and file ogres are 10-15 points per wound. In the interest of not posting point values, Gnobbos are dirt, dirt cheap by comparison. And 180 Sharp Stuff attacks is nothing to scoff at.
I've also been considering using Skragg for such a list.
Ive played scrag lists befor and they are not fun.
The game points was 2000 and he had scragg, two hunters each with both sabers and magic weapons. he then had 4-6 gorgers. a giant. and a scrap launcher and some bulls. and maybe a gnoblar unit and some gnoblar scouts. his army was exactly 2000
he wrecked my lizards really hard. mostly because I wasnt expecting the 4-6 gorgers to come behind my army and eat my engine of the gods and munch on my temple guard. I was expecting at least 4 but im pretty sure their was 6 because he got all of them in. it was a terrible massacare for me
the hunters shot my saurus calvary down to 4 then sent the sabers after them. the sabers then charged in a couple of my skink units and ate two skinks units. he had four sabers and i only killed one of them with the charge reaction. the giant and his bulls ate one of my sarus warrior units and then just when I though things were going to get good he summoned four freakin gorgers to lock my engine and temple guard.
it was terrible game for me....
Hmmm. My problem with Skragg is I am trying to focus on a wintery/savage type theme, not a bloody butchery theme. If that makes sense... my ogres aren't insatiable eating machines, they're tough, hardened survivors from the most remote, snow-capped mountains. If I took him, it'd definitely be a "counts as" situation.
Glad to hear about the ogres winning. I hope your lizards didn't give them indigestion.
and on terms of fielding masses of gnoblars I definatly think it could work to your advantage highly. they dont cost a lot and you can field a ton of them for nothing. three units of 20 for only 120 points.
the way ive seen mass ogre slaughter with tons of gnoblars is of course lots of bulls. and for every unit of bulls give them a large detachment of gnoblars. and the detachments of gnoblars soak up damage and march towards war machine or flank and outnumber for the bull units. they also take up lots of space which prevents fast calvary from swooping in behind you. and you definatly need the scraplauncher ive seen it do terrible things. but basicaly the gnoblar units really work for ogres thats why they are there. just really make sure you are fielding a BSB so your gnoblars dont flee. they wont panic your army but you still dont want them breaking from combat

Not your bad... I am just torn on Skragg... he's pretty good, and everything, but I am not sure he fits well fluffwise.
I was thinking 3 units of 3 bulls, 3 units of 30 gnoblars, 2 units of 3 Ironguts, 2 units of 10 Trappers, 2 Gorgers, a tyrant, a hunter and two butchers. That leaves... roughly 46 more points out of 2000. Maybe I'll switch out a Butcher for a BSB, as I'm not too fond of gut magic, and I tend to be overly paranoid about magic. Give him a runemaw or great skull or something.
well, scrap launchers dont technically use gun powder, so you would be in the clear.
the reasson I love them though is because they use the big template and have killing blow.
Yeah, I'm not worried about scraplaunchers fluffwise... I'm worried about... what is it? 30+ metal bits, many of them quite small... heh.
that list seems pretty hard but the only problems i see is that your bull units and iron guts are too small. I would field them in at least units of 4 to an upwards of 6. I have a lizardman army which I play constantly but I also own the ogres book and have played them a lot and four bulls at least and four iron guts seem the best. mostly because with only three wounds a peace that is only 9 wounds and ogres dont have the best armor. I would also consider getting some lead belchers in that list if you can they are a really nasty and mean unit and ogres dont have much range other than the scrap launcher and hunters and the yhetees, thought costly, are also a unit ive seen work wonders because of the high movement and ability to move through terrain which helps ogres because being on all blocks of 40 mm dont have much movement cept forwards.
I agree on the BSB swap for the butcher. the other butcher I would just use as a scroll caddy. the two gorgers are perfect, they are killing machines and do wonders against war machines and gunline armies. and any other army they come against because of the unbreakable....for only 75 points you cant really beat them
