Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was looking at the stats for these guys and at 1st I thought they did 3D6 impact hits on the turn they charge which I thought was ok for there cost but then I was speaking to a guy at my store and he corrected me saying that's it's only 3D3 impact hits which In my opinion is rubbishA unit of 3 goblin chariots puts out 3D6 S5 impact hits and they are 150 points cheaperIs there any use for these guys or r they just a monster that looks good but is in actualy fact is useless on the fieldAt 1st I was going to do a list with 3 of these guys with a hunter on 1 of them but now I'm thinking that these guys are way over pointed for what they doAny thought?
The "guy" was part right. It is 3D3, but if the 2 highest die scores equal 10 or higher, then a 1 is added to each die. Now you have 3D3+3 impact hits.
Remember, the Stonetusk also get to Thunderstomp, and the beastrider also has his attacks.
Even with a new armybook, I still don't believe a hunter brings anything to the table. A hunter atop a stonehorn, plus any items to protect him ( and maybe the SH ), will dock you around 500 points. So, unless you're playing a game over 2.5k, he's taking a big bite out of your character allowance.
Learning from, waddywoos, place a TT in the center of your force to mess with the opponents in CC. Place a SH on one flank, and a MFC unit on the other. Everyone flanks for each other, ASL in most combats, and everyone gets the "generals" leadership to test on.
Well, there's a quick run through of "blah". Hopefully, you've gleaned something useful from it. Having multiple monsters isn't bad, you just need to build your list around the whole idea.
Yea but what really are the chances of getting a roll of 10+ I mean it doesn't even have swift stride
And will it even be able to protect ur flank? 3d3 impact hits is pretty lame for a 250 point model. It seams that it will only be able to win combat with its thunder stomp and if u compare it to a hyda which is half the points and 10 times better in combat
I was so close to starting ogre kingdoms until I realised that that this guy is rather pathetic considering all the new monster gw are producing
I mean it's not even immune to physcology
1. You should never use a lone monster, anyway. They always need a buddy, just like blocks of troops do.
2. Having 3D3 impact hits, is really balanced, since its a S6 monster. If the strength was higher, this thread would be about how "cheesy" players are for having 2 stonehorns in their list. Still be able to use thunderstomp? Yes, please!
In CC, it has 5+1 (frenzy) attacks at S6, plus a 4+ save.
3. They have frenzy, so they are Immune to Psychology (p 70 WHRB ).
4. They also cause terror.
I've taken down hydras with a stonehorn, though at the cost of him.

Considering a Stone Horn is only 50pts more than a Giant you're getting something that does Impact hits, has higher toughness, a save, more reliable attacks AND has an Ogre mounted on top of it......... Sure it's not stubborn but you should never be throwing it against something that it can't take out. Speaking of which.....
Monsters, generally speaking, are infantry killers. They wade into str3 or 4 troops and cause huge amounts of Casualties with their High Str and thunder stomp while being practically impervious to the return low strength attacks. Whacking them against other Monsters is wasting their own Thunderstomp, which is built into their points. You have Iron Guts and so forth for killing monsters like Hydras.
I'll agree that the Stonehorn is a pretty good monster.
I have had a couple 3k point games so far with my Ogres, but haven't used my stonehorn yet due to not having any mournfang to pair it with.
But even though I havent used one yet, I can see the potential to be very good, since my thundertusk managed to kill a group of 40 odd HE spearmen with a mage in and 4 of those dragon prince cavalry guys on his own, all the while weathering bow fire from a group of 15 of those shadow archer guys.
If my thundertusk can do that, the stonehorn should ne better.
May the Dragon of Unhappiness never fly up your bottom.
