Are magic attacks "ranged attacks"? Can you cast deathspells at wizards and make them lose levels if the spells go off?
The general consensus is YES. It's treated as a ranged attack in all respects except it doesn't roll to hit per say.
As was said above, the general consensus is yes, and people have been employing this strategy to good effect.

Its not even general consensus. The FAQ outright says ranged attacks work. Magic missiles are ranged are they not? It's also one of the dirtiest things ogres have in that book.
