how do you play ogres now with the new rule book (mostly the 5 rank rule) like how is your army lists now? and what are your units size and wepons.
im thinking of turning my ogres into there basic form, 3 to a unit and ogre clubs.
how do you think this will work if i had like 4 -5 of these units per 2000 points and then upgrade my ironguts and maneaters and stuff?
units of 3 bulls iwth extra hand weapons are great on flanks, either as guards or flankers. They bring alot of attacks some impact hits, and have a good reach to do it.
And with the new panic rules, you can send 2 units after warmachines, and if one turns tail, the others will make it anyway (unless destroyed of course)
Ironguts will do great hammers, in units of 4-6. Use a different formation depending on whom you play. Against 25 mm bases, go 5 wide, you'll fit all your bases corner to corner. They nicely babysit butchers, and can bring around a warbanner or a ragbanner to a flank where your tyrant's leadership doesn't reach. You can also field them without any banners, saves points, and also denies your opponent the 100 points for grabbing them if things go ill.
Maneater unit sized depend on taste and expectations you have of them. 1 is a speedbump/disruption, 2 a stand alone flank guard and tarpit unit. 3 will provide a shooting fest, and crash in with 15 attacks and 3 impact hits on the charge !
I using a Skragg army, and in my second game (which I lost miserably) I put him with 4 ironguts, making for a five wide formation. It was tough to maneuver and took a beating from missile and magic fire.
But then again, so did the Ogre Bulls, where Skragg eventually retreated before dying.
The two bull units are three each and have only a musician. Any points I save by not giving them further upgrades go to gnoblar units.
I have three maneaters, but I'm beginning to think they are a huge point investment for minimal return, though I do like the idea of putting Skrag with them to make him less likely to panic from combat results.
If you're asking if you should go five wide, I don't think so. Disregarding the points sunk into such a unit, they are hard to maneuver into position, and the enemy can always choose to avoid it and pick off your smaller units. Though I have heard one guy on another forum say he does that with a BSB and a tyrant for great results.
Four wide is the max you need to cover a front rank of 5 of normal troops. I would keep them naked at 3 models like you were thinking. You're opponent still has to do 3 wounds to make them panic and if you setup right you should be taking panic at your Tyrant's leadership.
