I just started Orks and Goblins and will be playing many 500pts against beastmen
Ork Big Boss
25 Ork boyz built with spears
6 are command models
5 Boar boyz with fc and spears
20 Goblins unbuilt
10 spider riders unbuilt
was thinking of doing both with bows.
Looking forward to suggestions haven't won a game yet and hoping to change that
Hi and welcome to the Waaagh!!
Using the models you have, I would suggest
General - Orc Shaman - Level 2
25x Orc Boyz, with Spears and full Command, in a 6x4 formation. Put the General in here (will give you 2 extra models in the rear rank)
20x Goblins, with Shields and Short-Bows, Musician and Standard, put these in 5x4 formation
5x Spider Riders with Short Bows, Musician, Standard
Not many units here, but, I think its about as good as you will get using your current models and sticking to 500 points.
The problem with such a low points allowance is you just won't get much into your army, I think that to have a fun game of WFB you really need to have a bare minimum of 800 points per side.
The latest edition really rewards large units and O+G are all about having a lot of models on the table. With low unit counts a single failed animosity can really ruin your day :/
If you can talk your friends into upping the points limit to 800 and with just a few extra models you could field this -
General - Orc Shaman - Level 2, Talisman of Preservation
BSB - Goblin Big Boss - Shield, Armour of Fortune
40x Goblins, Shields, Short Bows, Full Cmd - in 5x8 formation, General in here
24x Orc Boyz - Spears, Full Cmd - in 6x4 Formation, Shaman in here
5x Spider Riders - Short Bows
1x Goblin Wolf Chariot
1x Doom Diver
This list will require you to get a few more models (Goblin hero, another box of Goblins, chariot and doom diver) but will give you a very nice list fir 800 points, a great base to build on for larger games and an introduction to a few of the things that Greenskins do best!
The Doom Diver is great for softening up armoured units before they get into combat or taking out cavalry/etc that is advancing on a flank
The Spider Riders are useful for warmachine hunting, flank protection or mis-directing units
The Chariot is great for ramming into flanks or damaging oncoming cavalry. Even if you just get the Impact hits, they normally earn their points and more.
Goblins are great in very large units, with 40 you can start in a 5x8 formation, which will hold fast against mostunits for a few turns, more than long enough to get something else (chariot/Orcs) into the flank and wipe it out. If you feel that you don't need so many ranks to hold, then can be re-formed into a 10x4 horde.
The Boyz with shields are used to crash into the flank of whatever your Goblins are holding, with the spears giving an extra-rank, they will be pretty killy against a lot of units at this point level. They are tough enough to survive a few rounds if they do happen to get charged as well.
Some idea's for excalating this list in the future
Start to think about Lord/Hero choices. At low points Goblin heroes are very economical, but, I really prefer Orcs as my general/BSB whenever possible.
Also I always find a mixture of Big and Little Waaaggh magic very effective. Running a single Orc Shaman (lvl 3) with a couple of Night Goblin Shamans (each lvl 1 or 2) seems to work well. The risk with NG shamans is the roll of 1 on the mushroom dice ending your magic with that character and maybe damaging it, but, I find the trade of for the extra dice each spell more than worth it.
Add another box of Goblins to the Horde and some Nasty Skulkers. 30 points for the skulkers will give you 9 attacks with killing blow against an enemy character, well worth the investment!
Grab a few Orcs. Maybe even some Savages (TBH since the new rulebook was released, I tend to not play normal boyz and use units of Savages at all times) make your main 'killy' Orc unit Big Un's.
Get a few more chariots. Wolf Chariots are very effective and can now be run in units of 1-3.
More warmachines are very useful. I don't rate spear-chukka's myself, but they are points cheap. I try and fit in 2 Doom Divers whenever I can, and 1 or 2 Rock lobbers if possible.
I hope this is usefull for you.
thanks for the response, you've given me lots to think on with what you provided. probably wont be going much higher then 500pts for a while as thats all my friend has.
