    1000 points, soft list

Planning on heading in for a few quick games next week with a little 1000 point list I just cooked up.

    Night Goblin Big Boss.
Great Weapon, light armour. Talisman of Preservation. Army general.

    Night Goblin Big Boss.
Great weapon, light armour. War Banner. Battle Standard Bearer.

    Night Goblin Great Shaman.
Lvl 3 caster. Talisman of Endurance.

    Night Goblin Shaman.
    Lvl 1 caster. Power stone.

    34 Night Goblins.
    Spears. Full command.

    29 Night Goblins.
    Spears. Full command.

    20 Night Goblins.
    Spears.

    20 Night Goblins.
    Spears.

    24 Night Goblins.
    Short bows. 1 Fanatic.

    23 Night Goblins.
    Short bows. 1 Fanatic.

I'm maxed on hero choices, but have some flexibility everywhere else.

This army is pretty straight forward: The two big anvils go in the centre, protecting each other's inner flanks, with the small hammer units of spears on each side to protect the outer flanks and flank charge units stuck in the anvils.

The archers sit on the extreme flanks, protecting the hammers' flanks, shooting when possible and hopefully getting at least one of the two fanatics into contact with an enemy unit at some point in the battle.

The two shamans sit back (preferably in cover) and either buff of blast depending on what spells I get.

Against combat heavy armies I sit the archers in the front and shoot, then flee once charged, absorb the charge with the anvils, rinse and repeat.

Against shooty armies I die in droves and call my opponent a fairy while returning fire with the short bows and shamans.

Against super-powerful combat armies, again, I likely get torn to pieces while the 12 year old I'm playing dribbles all over his Daemons.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

I could perhaps be convinced to drop one hammer unit for 3 trolls split up in a unit of 2 and a unit of 1 to act as close support to the anvils. Normally I would have a small unit of wolf riders, but I couldn't find the points. And with close to 50 short bow attacks and 2 fanatics on the flanks, I don't think enemy light cavalry will be enough of an issue to swing the battle for my opponent. War machines will be a problem, but I have the bodies on the field to soak up a LOT of shooting at 1000 points imo

How are you actually going to kill anything? You have a lot of bodies but all they have is str3 attacks..........at WS2. You'll be stretched to kill Empire in combat and anything with high toughness or decent armour (or both) will wade through your units with barely a scratch. As for your 'hammer' units, how are they acting as a hammer? Hammers are units that actually kill things in combat. If you charged those 'hammers' into the Flank of, say, Ogres or Chaos Warriors all you're doing is getting more of their models in combat and letting them kill more of you. Not actually doing more damage to them.

Maybe swap out the two 'hammer' units for Trolls? Maybe a unit of 6 to really cause some people pain.

I fear Lord Borak is right about the lack of power..

Funny story, I had a list much like this last week for a 'funny list only' tournament (i added some trolls ,a pump wagon and squigriding bsb) and was faced against an ogre player. wasnt all that much just 3 blocks of T4 ogres and a general if i recall. i saw his army, looked at my own and realised: How on earth can i damage those bastards!?

i could suggest putting the spearmen together to make it a big buss of 40, lasts alot longer when enemy units are grindng through your goblins.
But what it really needs is a Hammer of some sorts, now it has only Anvils.
    hammers i can think of:
    - a regiment of Black orcs or Savage orcs Big uns. expensive for a 1k game.
    - trolls 4-6 trolls,
    - squigherder horde (perhaps 16 herders 24 squigs for a 40 guy unit). expensive for your wallet, but quite fluffy for this list
    - a block of 2-3 wolf chariots.

You could also replace some of those magic items with some extra firepower instead,
    such as a doomdiver.
    Maybe a mangler.
    Perhaps more fanatics,
or best yet to add a few Night Goblin big bosses with great weapons to add to your hordes of goblins!
all of these are well capable of destroying higher toughness/ armoured mobs.

edit: note that it is allowed to havemore than 4 characters this edition. you can bring many big bossesas long as you dont spend more than 25% of the list

    2 words: sneaky stabbin

smaller units of goblins, when used properly, are great for luring people into getting flanked.

for example. archer units 2 deep 10 wide in the front.

they get charged and stand and shoot, get broken. the army then tests panic on ld8 re-rollable.

now the enemy hits one of the blocks of spears, gets stuck, gets flanked by sneaky stabbin' spears on one or both sides and gets obliterated

sneaky stabbin makes goblins into monsters

-2 armour save re-rolling to hit and would? you're averaging 7 wounds on anything but knights, and you're taking away your opponent's rank bonus.

that cuts through anything, even chaos warriors

btw I am working up 6 trolls and a giant and 10 wolf riders, I just don't have them painted yet. I've been finding all goblins actually pretty solid in small games. your opponent can't guard all his flanks because you just have too many units

and with a lvl 1 and level 3 both spamming sneaky stabbin, you're getting it almost every turn on at least one unit if not 2

I should also mention I am using these night goblins are regular goblins now which changes thins up a bit and I've made a couple of other small changes

I'll post my new list when i get a chance
