So I'm in a bit of a pickle with my local WHFB campaign, and I'm hoping to get some feedback.
I recently picked up O&G after having played VC and Brets for about two years. My only former experience with da boyz comes from 40k and Blood Bowl, so I'm struggling a bit getting my orcs up to snuff.
To complicate matters, I have a couple pressing games this week against my only remaining neighbor, a Beasts of Chaos player who has a significant points advantage as well as about ten more years experience than I have. The games I've played thus far have been just shy of massacres in his favor, and my biggest issue is trying to hold off his minotaurs without overreacting and getting destroyed by the rest of his army.
At this time it's somewhere in the neighborhood of my 800 vs his 1150. He played something that looks like this last time:
2 Beastman Chariots
1 Ambush Unit (pretty substantial, 25ish models I think? Not terribly clear on the BoC rules)
1 large regiment of whatever those goobers are that have great weapons. Again, not terribly familiar with Beasts of Chaos.
I've tried a couple army configurations, such as a heavy goblins list so I could stand to live through a regiment taking off like pansies in the face of the chariot charge. I've also tried rock hard options like Black Orcs to be able to take the charge and like it. I've tried loading up on maneuverable units to try to evade his chariots and catch him from the side. I've even tried loading up on savage orc boyz and trying to pound the snot out of his stuff after he does his damage.
The major restrictions at this stage of the campaign for me are:
only 1 Special choice
limited to 1 hero, no lords, and no casters higher than level 2
My opponent is less limited by the amount of territories he controls, but he's been playing a variation of the same list for years so I don't anticipate it changing much.
Thus far my best luck has been with a goblin heavy list, having run his command unit off the table and mopped up a chariot pretty easily. This list seems to be woefully inadequate for fighting off Minotaurs however.
Go left field and play all goblin wolf boyz with a chariot for a special choice, then mount your character on a chariot as well. Those things charge 18 inches which is further than anything he has and the impact hits mean weapon skill doesn't come into it. Avoid the minotaurs by fleeing from them with fast cavalry and regrouping. If they are out of the game his big hitting combat unit is ineffective. If he has a blocked up regiment get round behind it and charge it, once the ranks are gone he will have problems.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
How about you have even points, I know it's not realistic in the spirit of WAR. But, rules is rules
