Like a Kilt on a windy day... sometimes mostly to be silly!
Depends on who you're playing I guess and usually one maybe two
"EVERYONE" ~Leon the Professional~
I know it's kind of a noobish thought to ask this but hey... I am a noob. My current thought is no, they are pretty lame and ineffective. this coming from a game where I used them and found that I missed the shield more than anything anyway, and their range was far too short to be of any great use. But perhaps someone out there can show me some tactical use for them.
I use the bows when I'm taking a min block of 20 to toss on the flank with a fanatic. Few things are better for 85 pts =) Those pot shots still have a decent chance of knocking over a couple of fast cav models or flyers and getting them under US5. Just make sure their flee path only goes through orcs so they don't cause a panic down the line!
im a noob as well. but i have found a couple of good uses for them. they are a good distraction for fast cav. and they are good to hide fanatics for some certain fanatics tricks. and they are good distractions for while they are on a hill.
I only ever put a musician in my units of Night Goblin archers, usually 20 strong, in order to help rally after fleeing a charge. I usually take Skarsnik so the Tricksy Traps rule is amazing here! I usually put a single fanatic in the unit too just to surprise that cavalry charge! I deploy the units 10x2 which helps to release the Fanatics when doing wheels and turns.
Don't leave home without them!
Don't forget you can shoot all ranks at an enemy on a hill too! Handy fun!
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
I sometimes take a block of 20 w/bows + fanatics, then park them in front of my warmachines to deter flyers, fast cav, and the like.
Two's to kill. Ahh, sweet sweet music.
they get the same bonus for shooting at large targets. 4 ranks of 20 shots at that guy on the dragon is going to kill some stuff. You could easily take down a griffon or pegasus or whatever.
I like units of 10 Night goblins with bows, simply because they're cheap! 30 points a unit is a steal, if just to clog up all the paths, so calvary can't run directly around to the back of your army.
