ok i'm actually a FB noob period started a weeka go, i bought a warboss, a orc box and a night goblin box, i was curious as to what i should outfit my first NG and Orc groups with.
I was thinking the orcs with Extra Hand WEapons and shields, like my warboss, and the Gobbies with short bows, also i noticed the orc boxed set doesn't come with bows to make arrer boys. are the pewter orc arrers the only ones out there?
There are no longer any plastic arrer boys unfortunately. I can't offer much advice on orcs but i'd give the goblins shields + spears, and get some fanatics for the unit
we’re thrilled to have you
ok, you’ve got a warboss, some orcs and night gobbos
boil in a bag army : )
i would personally suggest a savage orc warboss (extra A, free ward save, throw him a great weapon for S7 [will wound almost anything in the game on a 2+ and will destroy chariots in one blow] and if you’re a nervous nelly like me give him the armor of gork for T6 [as tough as a steam tank]) thrown into a unit of 29 savage (in 2250pt games, fewer orcs in 1500 or what have you) orcs 5x6 for a brick of murder... as i’ve previously intoned i love me some savage orcs…
Immune to Psychology
There are no bad units in the O+G army but I love savage orcs the bestest 'cuz they are my favorite guys to paint, are considered insane even by other orcs, believe so hard in their warpaint it actually gives them a ward save, are a simple core choice, only cost 10pts a troop and their boss has 4 4/5 attacks. I have never bought their actual models because regular boys stripped of their armor and greenstuffed look just as well. Additionally they won't break your bank [30 official savage orc models from GW = $120... 30 regular boys converted = $52]. Fielded 6x5 these freaks have 15 3/4 + 4 4/5 attacks across the front. My favorite models plus they are a buzzsaw in combat.
… combine this brick of solid troops with a block of night gobbos (spear, shield, netters, 1 fanatic) and you’re all set with a solid middle to your army… the netters -1 str ability is amazing when the unit is trying to wound your orcs on a 6+…
i would advise avoiding orc arrow boys as they’ve brought me nothing but tears over the years but give them a proxy and see how you like them… there are a lot of ‘near gw’ sites to buy orc arrow boys that aren’t pewter…
learn your army, learn how to use animosity to your advantage and time your waaagh! well… and no one can stop you
have tons of fun and bring some glory to the greenskins : )
Be careful with the post about savage orcs. First of all ANY Orc warboss would have str 7 with a great weapon, and if hes new he won't be playing games that big, so his 'warboss' would only be a big boss. Second unless your whole force (the orc unit, and the N goblin unit) are attacking the same enemy unit netters would not help the orcs, only the goblins. Now since you're new you'd probably want to stay away from greenstuff for now, develope your other skills first. Lastly, savage orcs are NOT immune to psychology.
I would give the Orc Boyz shields, and if you think you might give them the extra hand weapon just put another weapon on their back or belt, this way you could say "they have shields" or "they have extra choppas and shields". This gives you a very diverse unit for making different lists, for one you could have them with just shields, or both options, or big un's with shields, or even biguns with both options. Depending on how you want the unit to work, I don't suggest spears though, when you're an orc you usually want to charge (plus spears don't give you extra str in the first round of combat).
The Night Goblins I would personally give them just hand weapons and shields, the short bows really suck, and when you have such cheap troops it's really easy to get good combat resolution from rank bonuses and outnumbering. Sure if you like get fanatics, but I woulden't suggest netters unless you have a bigger unit. A unit of 20 with full command costs 80 points, plus 35 for netters? no thanks, save that for the 30+ units.
On your Big Boss I'd model him with a great weapon, and a shield on his back. This way you could use him as a regular orc type with a great weapon (or magic weapon, I would suggest Mortag's Best Basha) or a Black Orc (who can keep your boyz in line) and have the armed to da teef rule if you don't give him magic weapons.
Anyways, good luck, and happy stomping!
thanks, i wasn't very sure about short bows to be honest, again haven't played a game yet but they seem... sucky orcs with standard bows seem like a better choice if i could get them on a hill.
also are orc boyz any good with spears in any situation? i know the charge your better off with the chopa but after wards? or should i use them on calvary instead?
also i do have some exp with greenstuff not sure how i'll end up using any yet though

A good basis to work from is to have the Orc Boys with extra hand weapons and full command.
Night Goblins are best used as cheap as possible, so stick with just hand Weapons and Shields. Give them Nets, and also add a single Fanatic to each unit when you have some. No command here.
A good Warboss config. is to just use the most basic Boss (Not a Black Orc for example) and mount him on a Boar. Thats +2 save. then add the awesomely cheap weapon which gives 3 stat boosts, and an enchanted shield on top. Give him heavy armour, and have him sit in the Boyz unit.
From talking to people back home, Black Orcs (Blorcs) are generally not a good unit to use. Look better on paper than they actually perform.
Consider the Battle for Skull Pass set, although the gobbos do come with Spears/Bows, not ideal, but you can use them as HW/S, most opponents should be ok with it.
Spider Riders, Wolf Chariots, Giants and ofcourse more numbers make great additions.
sounds good phoenix thanks, as for the mounted boss on the boar i gotta take him as a black orc for heavy armor but thats alright weapon skill and quelling Ani sounds decent(for boar boy squads in the future)
Also being a new greenskins nutball, I too moddeled my first Orc Boyz with dual choppas with full command (if it's meant for combat, go all out with the upgrades). You definitely don't want these sort of guys shot down by ranged fire (light armour only helps by so much, but T4 compensates for it), so if you have spare points when going for a 500pt army I'd grab either two spear chukkas (pathetic alone, but two count as 1 special) or a pack of squig hoppers (5-6 of them is fine and they got 2 attacks at S5, plus they also count as special).
I too fancy the Black Orc Big Boss due to higher WS and Armour thanks to heavy armour (definitely don't want to be whooped by a possible hero with greater WS). Sure he'd be a costlier character, but the advantages he has are the sole reason he's worth that much.
Not much else to say except experiment (proxies if necessary) and see what'll take your fancy.
