If you give a hero/warboss a spiteful shield, effigy of mork and use gork'll fix it on an enemy unit that has just attacked you do the 2's count as 1's because of the effigy or what?
i guess it would be a warboss not a hero

I would guess yes, the -1 to hit causes the number shown on the die to be reduced by 1. Also, as I'm sure you're aware, the Gork'll fix it causes 6s to become 1s, so the enemy unit has a 1/2 chance of causing a s5 hit on themself, and (most likely) will only be hitting you on a 5 (or 4 if better WS). This is nasty.
Another fun little tactic is to cast Gork'll fix it on a unit that has failed a fear test (vs. giants, trolls or wyverns, or any other unit that has magicaly managed to get fear). 6s to hit please, oh look, all 6s turn to 1s. YOU CAN'T HIT ME!
'any foe that rolls a 1 when attempting to strike...'
effigy of mork:
'attacks... suffer -1 to hit'
gork'll fix it:
'any of the unit's to hit... rolls of 6 are counted as being 1s...'
shield / effigy combo > 50 pts so yes, Warboss only option...
anyway... shield does its S5 hitty bit when a one is rolled to hit in close combat... or when gork'll fix it magically turns those sixes into 1s... effigy of mork doesn't change the roll and thus wouldn't trigger the shield's bite should an opponent roll a 2...
the reason gork'll fix it makes a difference comes from the spell's ability to cause a miscast/prevent irresistible force... the die actually 'changes' to a 1... magic!
When it says the attack suffers -1 to hit, the is always assumed to read the rolled dice suffer a modifier of -1 to the score shown, i.e. you take one off the number rolled. People just say "you need fours to hit with a -1 modifier so you need fives". The modifier is applied to the dice scores. Therefore 2s become 1s and the shield bites more faces off.
As a further question on the spiteful shield, if a character fighting in a challenge died due to the effects of the shield, would the warboss still get to attack back for overkill?
I'm not trying to argue either way, just pointing out the potential for confusion.
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

I think the "unmodified" arguement is pretty strong. Can anyone come up with examples where the term "unmodified" is used in the new books. I know the old VC book had it in the Banner of the Barrows but I don't have the new book so I don't know if it's in this one.
But basically because the term unmodified was in the description it allowed wights to hit targets behind a defended obsitcal (back then you needed sixes) to hit on 3's regardless.
