Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've realised that failing animosity tests can really put a dent in my magic phase, since shamans in a squabbling unit can't cast spells for that turn. So where should I put them? Do you think I should just accept the fact that I will squabble occasionally and put them in normal units?
I have an orc great shaman and 2 night goblin shamans. I've had a few thoughts - maybe someone should hide in a black orc unit. However, this might reduce the unit's hitting power as well as putting my wizards right into the thick of combat. I also have no warmachines so theres no joining crew. Maybe have them in chariots or mounted on boars/wolves. This again seems very dangerous as they are extremely prone to missile fire.
I generally ave 3 shamans in my army, 1 goes in a unit of big uns with a BOrc BSB, 1 either rides a wyvern and is partially kitted for combat or goes with the BOrcs, the third is a NG shaman and goes in a NG unit. He has to live with animosity. Its not too big a blow normally, and the other two (my main casters) are definitely gonna be OK. its all to personal taste really. Taking lots of shamans helps too (as does taking lots of ANYTHING in an O+G army- don't do things by halves!), as does giving non-shamans bound spells.
Thanks for the reply. I'll put my orc great shaman with my black orc unit, but I'm still concerned about his safety when it comes to combat. Maybe I could mount him on a boar and get best boss 'at for added protection. I'll probably mount my first night goblin shaman on a wolf and put the third NG shaman in a unit of NGs.
Personally I prefer the amulet of protectyness to the 'at because a) the stuff your BOrcs fight againgst will be big fat chunky tincanned elites, and b) at 25 points it leaves room for a scroll or stone- both v useful.
c) he's also t5 with 3w. Thats hardly a pointy-eared-and-dies-really-quickly statline, now, is it?
the problem with shamans in a chariot is you're making a relatively weak model and putting it on a nice big juicy target that works best in combat. I think the wolf idea is better, or possibly give him maads map. I have heard that can be of use to gobbo shamans and would be intrigued to see what it can do!
Depending on the enemy I frequently start the game standing next to a unit if it's safe. My shaman on boar usually begins the game riding in the same unit as my Black Orc BSB, so he's safe from animosity in the first turn. If I don't have charges on turn 2, I'll sometimes walk him behind the unit or move him into one that's out of position in preparation for combat in 3.
I also sometimes put my shaman on boar in with Trolls. He's not completely protected from shooting that way, but it's safer than nothing, offers MR2 if they're stone trolls, and they can be outside 12" from the general and not doomed to stupidity. Remember a wizard can still cast while trapped inside a unit that failed stupidity.
I have had luck with this using a Savage Orc Great Shaman (ofcourse in a boar chariot).
IMO all casters should be mounted these days. There's no penalty for it other that 360 LOS is loss but inside units, between units, or hiding in terrain is where casters usually spend their time anyways so loosing 360 LOS isn't that big a deal.
One strategy you could try is to put multiple casters in one unit. That will help strengthen more mgaic phases by decreasing the chances of a shaman being in a unit affected by animosity. I think I would choose NG's to put them in. That way you get SOME protection from mage hunters by using fanatics.
I'm not too fond of the chariots idea because I don't want to be charging my shamans into combat, which is what chariots predominately do.
hmm, Maad's map...meh. I don't know about this. Looks to me like a 25pt item that becomes useless 1 in 6 times. Even deploying a lone shaman as a scout seems a bit suicidal.
You could put them with a warmachine crew. They are usually a little further away but no animosity and fairly safe from everything else.
