This November I will be taking part in the U.K.’s grand tournament ‘Throne of Skulls’, and for the fun of it more than in a massive attempt to win I have opted to take a green skins army.
Its expected that the main armies to feature in this tournament will be Vampire counts (as a lot of the scenarios are favoured to their abilities), and daemons due to the sheer brutishness that a daemon force can bee tooled to. The remaining quarter can expect to see the classic power game armies such as the Dwarf Thorek list, though the high elves will be much modified to the lists in previous tournaments due to how points are scored making the bolt thrower Teclis army or Dragon list unfeasible.
Anyway, my questions are;
1) just how effective will an Orc and Goblin army fare realistically even just a fun army?
2) what type of force would you guys recommend for and Orc and Goblin GT army? (I.e. fast moving cavalry / all goblin magic / lots of orcs / monsters and big things?)
Now I’ve planed on an all night goblin list, 3 units of 40 each with nets and 3 fanatics, 2 units of 10 hoppers, 2 spear chuckers, a rock lobber, 3 night goblin shaman tooled out for magic with bound items, and a common goblin great shaman (for that extra Ld) as general.
Recently though iv been thinking about maybe a mixed force or even just an orc war boss in a unit of some type. Even just flying about on a wyvern. Anyway…
The scoring system is that you gain points for units killed:
Lord = 3pts
Hero = 1pts
(+1 if special character)
Core = 1pts
Special = 2pts
Rare = 3pts
(any unit under 100pts = only 1pts regardless of type)
This is added to:
Win = 30pts
Draw = 10pts
Loss = 1pts
Concede = 0pts
Now the force I have can do a lot of damage through magic (assuming nothing goes pop early on), and its hard to gain many points from my force with a total of 16pts. But, it is lacking leadership, and fighting ability other than some squigs, and I fear I may just end up running off the table from psychology checks before I can even bring my army to bare.
Would love to hear any opinions on what kind of GT Orcs and Goblins list you would take. Once again, I’m not looking to win every game but I don’t want to just hand over the game to my opponents easily.
If you are allowed special characters, then Sharsnik and Gobbla are a must. He's LD is great and his Prodder will enhance our magic phase that much more.
I've found that no matter the army I face that just how the O&G and made means that you have a chance to beat anyone on any given day, but you also have a chance to lose to any army, even the crappy ones, on any given day. Its a very luck dependent army, but ALWAYS gives a few good laughs.

I have to second pikus there when it comes to characters and goblin armies... personally I play pretty much a pure Night Goblin horde and I never leave home without skarsnik and gobbla... he adds some real hitting power to your goblins and his special rules can annoy your opponent especially his "tricksy traps" rule... which can just slow the enemy onslaught enough to give you a good fighting chance.
Also things like just using a generic goblin warboss decked out the right way can be a mach for most enemy characters and units.
I guess the other thing is whether you think that theme is just as important when writing a list or competetivness... I like a bit of both and I think that things like spider riders or wolf riders can be handy to harass enemey units.
I must say that plying pure goblin forces are so much fun and its scary when you finally finsh setting up an a well placed cannon shot sees a panic test first turn and half your army runs off... I love when that happens especially when you are playing power gamers who can't understand why you find it funny when you lose like that... as they forget the golden rule of gaming... just having some fun! lol
There is nothing more annoying when your Wyches with Plasma Grenades get "Always strikes First" for their combat drugs!
I have been looking at Skarsnik and he would save me points meaning i can get some wolf riders, maybe get rid of the rock lobba and get some spider riders also. on top of this his killing blow from gobbla should put a bit of fear into enemy characters, as well as him being leadershiip 8 (potential 9 with Horn of Urgok).
Think il have a tinker with the list and see what the outcome is.
I'm in Heat One (October) with my O&G's...
Maybe see you in the final, (hehe I doubt it)
If I can tear myself away from me paintbrush (time's running out!) I'll post my list up
