I noticed that most people seem to have either O&G armies or NG armies but no one seems to care much for the Orc armies?
Am I missing something here as I am new to the hobby but have been considering Orcs but it seems to me that I MUST field gobbos to make a reasonable fighting force.
Is this true or am I just not looking far enough into the army?
I mean if I gotta field NG's for their unique unit's then so be it but I was wondering if it is viable to field just Orcs?
At the moment I am stuck between DE and O&G so any information on the latter to sway me would be mighty appreciated
I play orc and goblin as my primary army. All Orc Armies are totally fine! its just that Fanatics allow you to kill nights and heavily armored units more effectively, also there is the psychological factor that comes with fielding Night Goblins. I've noticed units of night goblins at well placed spots in my battle lines will cause my opponent to make bad decisions( I.E attempt to release the fanatics and put the unit in a bad position to be charged OR the move certain units away fearing 3 d6 ap 3 hits.) Another factor they make great tie up units i field my night goblins in blocks of thirty with five in teh front rank. 3 ranks standard and out number can hold any unit in combat for two or three turns. When you do the math it's not that people take night goblins just for fanatics or because popular lists include them its that they are worth what you pay for ( close to nothing ).
Ok this is good very good, keep em coming
Another thing, if I could afford the O&G Army boxset (the £100 box) would it be worth it or should I start small (perhaps a box of boyz and a hero?)

The *current* iteration of the OnG boxed army that includes 38 Boyz and 20 Black Orcs is a great buy. It doesn't have any 'throwaway' models in it. The only downside is that the Battle for Skull Pass NGobs and Spider Riders can of course be bought for nothin' on eBay. The ones that come in the army box are the higher quality minis from the main line, so I think they're worth getting anyway. That box + one extra box of boyz and a shaman is a pretty darn solid 1500 pt army.
Just be careful and make sure you're getting the current version of the box. Some places still have the old one in stock that only has 10 Metal Black Orcs and 19 regular Orcs in it. The GW US online store seems to have pictures of both listed under the same item number....!
Wow cheers for the info , if thats the case I might hold off until the old boxset has ran its course that way I can save for the army set without breaking the bank too much
in any case does anyone have a nice army list that uses mostly an orc force ranging between 750-1000pts?
Here's my attempt at a 1k O&G list. It uses the orc army box set and ten extra orc boys. Hopefully the army box comes with a boar for the hero, if not you can start buying some spare boars, boar boys or whatnot.
Orc boys (Big 'Uns) with additional choppa x25, full command
Orc boys with additional choppa x25, full command
Black Orcs with shields x20, Full Command
Orc Big Boss with light armour, spear and shield on boar

Wonderful, that is just what I need
Get skull pass and split it with someone. your paying the price of one unit of night gobbos but your getting 3 units of em and a unit of spider riders, and a shaman. I would field orcs in my army but I decided to go all goblins. I think they look cooler and I like the cheapness. I held of so much stuff with three units of night goblins. Put fanatics in a unit they become elite
Heck, I had to buy the core rulebook for £ 30, or buy a box of Skull Pass for £ 40 with a shedload of gobbos inside. I'm going to give the Dwarves to small related children without batting an eyelid.
(who is a very lucky boy recently with half a black reach box too.)
I then got: Box O' Orcs. Box O' Fanatics. Box O' black Orcs. £ 41.
Box O' Black Orcs: Gives you a smashing special unit (Black orcs - To be augmented by approx 7 members of another box, with the remainder being converted into bosses sometime) Dry fit the models on bases first, so you can fit them next to one another, as if you're not carefull you end up with a line of black orcs doing the YMCA with axes, requiring an inch between each base.
Box O' Orcs: They're green and hit things. Fit them carefully during asembly or they may pop out like a impromptu game of jenga due to waving arms.
Box O' Fanatics:
Oh yes, That's a nice sprue. Extra bits just appeal to me alot. The models themselves are fantastic. and slot into my N.Gobbos Well
* And then I ordered 5x squig hoppers, 2x herds of squigs and the orc raider with a pig before the metal prices rose (And I loved the models so much - each and every one. Shoulda got a doom diver / giant spider really. There's christmas)
Next up: Wolf riders, (Fast Cavalry. With bows. Chase fleeing units, harass artillery and charge someone's rear) Night Goblins (Grudgingly so i can have nets, and remove the standard and boss from my archers.) and ... more orcs? doom Diver? Fabricate Spear Chukkas out of scrap and spare gobbo's?
