Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'll play against my friend's empire army in one or two weeks time and don't want to lose . It'll be the first time I play against 7th ed. empire. So I was wondering what units, tactics, armies etc. you prefer when playing vs. empire ?
Ps. it'll be a 2000 pt battle.
Do you know what sort of army he usually takes? What do you have available to you?
Watch out for those pesky Warmachines. A Mortar vs a block of Gobbos/Orcs = squished greenskins. A lot of the Empire artillery is good at bringing down O&G units. If you can get a unit of wolf riders or two, try to line up a clear charge path, and you should be able to bring down any warmachine turn two.
The Helblaster though, is pure lethal. It fires three barrels per turn, each barrel pumps out 3 Artillery D6 shots, then they're rolled to hit etc etc. One good volley can leave even the most respectable units shattered. In my time, I've managed to pop off a giant in one turn once. Just note that it tends to Miscast a lot. When that happens, not many of the results are favourable- it will have a 50% chance of dying iirc.
As for the R&Fers, don't expect to beat them in a fair fight. Detachments can do enough shooting damage in one Stand and Shoot, then the other Detachment can charge you in the flank, claiming your Rank bonus, probably tipping outnumber, and taking a flank charge.
Fortunately, Detachments tend to be rather small. One good shot from a Doom Diver, or a wrecking from Fanatics can blunt them, and the State Troops are far less scary then.
From experience, a good charge from a unit of Orcs tends to get rather devastating. A well timed Waaagh! can almost guarantee this. Throw in a character, and things get messy for the Empire.
Be weary of challenges. This is because the Empire characters (who have rubbish statlines) have access to the Van Horstmann's Speculum, which can swap combat stats with a character in a challenge (nasty for Orcs who tend to have some nice combat stats). Take a unit champion to accept any suspect challenges.
Then there's magic. If I want to annoy my opponent, I'll take a Lvl 4 wizard, 2 Lvl 2s, and a Warrior priest. Lores of Death and Fire combine extremely nicely and can make entire units of greenskins run for the hills. If I suspect him of harbouring Fanatics, I'll take the Crystal Ball. He then has to tell me everything about the units in range. You may want to invest in a Scroll caddy or two. The item that allows you to pinch one of his power dice and add it to your dispel pool can be nice.
That's all I can think of for now. Let me know what you think your opponent will bring, and I'll tell you how to counter it effectively.
Thanks for replying!
I have pretty much any units to pic from, though I 'only' have 60 orc R&F models at my disposal.
Concerning my opponent, I think that it is probable that he takes at least one heavy cavalry unit (knights, right?) and also at least one unit of 20+ sword- and spearmen with detachments.
On the other side I don't really see him using flagellant nor lots of light cavalry (pistoliers?)
Again thanks for the replies
against the flagellants, i would use war machines or magic to kill them, they have no armour at all so they are easy picking, i try not to get into combat with a unit of flagellants. fanatics are a good unit to field if you think a unit will charge you. i managed to take out 3 ogre bulls and a tyrant with 6 fanatics in one charge after my NG unit. to be truthful i did have a second unit of NG next to my first unit.
i love using Squig herds to take out blocks of infantry, they do attract fire though.
Well I don't really think that I will encounter many flagellants.
What worries me the most is his detachments that, I have heard, can be very nasty, but also his magic and war machines.
Would it be better with a magic user or a CC character as my lord choice ?
I'm thinking of making a list and then post it here to have some C&C, if it's ok.
Thats probably the best way to go, otherwise any advice we give is a little generic.
Ok, I'll probably have it ready for tomorrow of something.
Ok, so here's my list:
Goblin great shaman: lvl4, Best Boss Hat, Staff of Baduum - 260 *Goes in NG unit
Orc shaman: lvl2, 2 dispell scrolls - 150 *Goes in one of the orc boyz units
Orc big boss: BSB, Amulet of Protectyness - 120 *Goes in one of the orc boyz units
Orc big boss: Horn of Urgok, boar, light armour, shield - 130 *Goes in the boar boyz unit
29x Orc boyz: FC, shield - 204
29x Orc boyz: FC, shield - 204
5x Goblin wolf riders: musician - 66
29x Night goblins: FC, 2 fanatics - 157
2x Goblin spear chukkas - 70
Orc boar chariot - 80
5x Orc boar boyz: FC, War Banner - 173
6x Squig hoppers - 90
Giant - 205
Doom diver catapult - 80
Grand Total - 1989
That doesn't look too bad, I personally don't like the boar boyz, I'd prefer another unit of boyz in there instead. The itty ring would be useful too. How about bows or spears on the wolf riders?
Besides that, there's not really anything wrong with that army, I'd take it myself and expect half decent results against most builds.
