So my 2000 point has 2 units of Orc warriors wielding 2 choppas. At the moment I have 36 orc warriors because I made a shaman out of one of the orcs and alot of greenstuff from each box set.
The question is, would I be better off with my units organized at 6 x 3 or 5 x 4. ( I will fill the 5x4 extra spot somehow).
Each unit has a shaman in it. So what do you guys think would be a better way of going about setting them up. Thanks in advance.
Guess i can jump start this myself.
With the 6x3 set up you get more base to base contact and with 2 choppas that means more attacks.
With the 5x4 set up you get the extra rank if attacked from the side and more to rank bonus.
I plan to run both of my units with musician and standard bearer as well. Can anyone else who has maybe tried these two different set ups or one or the other let me know things that the setup lacked and did well on?
Yeah, 6x3 is generally the way to go. In fact, I tell a lie. 6x4 is the way to go. Go get another box of orcs! Attack! attack! attck! WAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!
Especially in a unit of big uns, 6x4 with 2 choppas is VERY MUCH worth it.
lol i say WWWWAAAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!!! to that to! more orcs!!! more orcs!!!!
I completely disagree. With orcs, they're bad fighters who are tough. Two more attacks isn't going to do that much at weapon skill 3. You HAVE to protect your rank bonus and outnumber at all costs and combo charge with another unit such as a troll or chariot. I would run my orc boyz 4 wide if I still could. 5 wide with a more survivable rank bonus is almost always better than 6 wide, unless you run elite infantry with a GOOD save and multiple attacks.
Make your orc units survivable and give the points you saved from double choppas to the character leading the unit. Orc characters are killy, always strength 4 or 5 (or more with a warboss), and can have a boar for an extra strength 5 attack. Orcs with double choppas just die that much quicker and then run away.
And Big'uns is just a bigger suicide pill. It suddenly goes from a 160 point unit to a 300 point unit with the same toughness and armor save, without much of a killing bonus to compensate.
Just my two cents.

I use a lot of magic, and so get off Waaaagh! and bash em ladz a lot. From a frontage of 6 I can get 14 attacks hitting on 4s or 3s, rerolling misses, at st5 for the first turn. Throw in a banner of butchery and suddenly you've got 20 attacks, 15 hits (generous to opposition) of which 5-8 can be expected to wound, causing a big modifier to saves. I'd rather have a nice large no. of attacks like this, plus a half decent static CR than just a very good static CR and no killing power.
I agree 100%. What's the point of going orcs with 2 choppas unless you want to maximise impact?
Go as wide as possible.
If all you want are the fixed bonuses for ranks, outnumbering etc then stick to goblins! Now they do need minimum in contact.
Unless i'm really struggling for deployment space, I always have my orc boyz 6 wide x 5 deep.
My reason is; against the armies i fight against (HEs, TKs, Dwarf, WE) they can normally cause several orc units to test for panic from missile fire. If i have 30+ figures they usually concentrate on one unit. I prefer to outnumber the opponent, with 20 orcs odds are you'll be in trouble when you reach the enemy.
Orc Boyz with choppas aren't bad in combat, i normally hit on 4's then wound on 3's. There's also a few combat orientated spells that help the wide unit. Waaagh and Bash 'em Ladz gives you rerolls to hit. The movement spells give you a higher chance of charging. They are sometimes fast, with a bit of luck you can charge in the first turn
For more expensive units (Black Orcs) i have them 5 wide and 4 deep. It's cheaper for a rank bonus. There are alot of players that have Black Orcs 6 wide and only 2 deep, and count on them being backed up with a flanking unit. You might disagree with me, but I don't like this tactic myself. I prefer to put morks spirit totem with Black Orcs, so you need the ranks
I agree on the black orcs, its to risky to put them only 2 deep. It seems as though my mind has been made up that my 2x choppa orcs are going to go 6 x 3 until im not broke and can make them 6 x 3+
2 rank deep Black Orcs just look vulnerable!
But it's only psychological. It's the best bangs per buck in my view.
My logic is that your extra guys fighting are going to get you more points than the extra ranks. Unless you are up against something really tough that outclasses the Black Orcs at which point you have a different problem.
E.g. 9x2 v 6x3
(I know that it's hard to get 9 all fighting but its just to make a point - 9x2 may well be a bit too extreme)
3 extra Black Orcs fighting versus 1 rank bonus - I would back my black orcs to get more than 1 wound. You have to be a gambler with Greenskins anyway
Similarly, going from 5x3 to 5x4 is effectively buying 5 more Black Orcs for just one more wound.
Come on guys - have a little faith in the Blingiest Orcs of All!!
Go 6x3 and use the change to buy an icecream
