I was just wondering if there was a "best" combo of weapons for a unit of Orcs. i know the difference between all the weapons but I'm new to O&G and not sure what seems to work best if it even makes a difference.
Orcs have an awesome array of weapon choices. I try to stay away from spears, but double choppa or choppa/shield both work wonders. It just depends on what you want that unit to do. If you want it to run in and kill things withut care of casualties, x2 choppas. If you want a defensive unit to house your casters in and keep good static combat res, then choppa/shield is the way to go.
Dual Choppaz only way to go.
I run 2 blocks of 25 orcs in my current list and neither of them is equip with dual choppas actually. Thats because I run a magic and shooting heavy list so I want things to keep units away from my back lines. choppa/shield is great for this because it give a nice armor save and keeps units tied up until I break them with static res. I find that in my type of list, 2 choppas leaves my only solid troops with a very little save and if they get charged they are gonners. But like I said before, it's all about what you want to use your troops for.
i usually use choppa and shield,
and in answer to your question i would say you only get +1 strength
Strength bonus is +1.
I always use two choppas.
I run a similar list to samick, lots of magic, lots of shooting. But i want to be able to counter charge with the help of the waagh and win combats. So the extra attacks make the differance for me.
If something is lining up a charge that will kill my orcs units due to their, I target it with my 10 powerdice or 6 warmachines.
Also toughness 4 goes a long way to compensating thye armour save.
If I could rely on charges, I think I might run at least 1 unit with x2 choppas, but with a magic heavy list the only way to do that is to use the waaagh spell that leaves my 5 war machines abandoned for a minimum of 1 turn. I also feel that it leaves my big 'uns too vulnerable. Anything with a strength of 4 or more (which is a VERY wide range of units) leaves the orcds unarmored and with a strength of 4 they are wounding you on 4+. Like I said it's all about what kind of list you run.
As previously said the role of the unit defines what is the best upgrade for it! I personally use double choppas most of the time, but using shield/choppa has it's merits too!
The war machines are removed if the crew is slain I suppose. If you make them charge with magic whaggg, the may get back and shoot in the next rounds...this is one of my main problems when using war machines and magic together so I currently prefer anti magic and war machines or full magic rosters, and in the first case I use night goblin shamans most of the time!
