I'm half considering getting a WHFB army after messing around with the skull pass and I quite like the idea of a NG horde. I would do this through buying the skull pass set maybe three times and adding a few bells to make it more interesting.
The set comes with spear NG and after reading around the opinion seem to be that the extra point is quite a lot for a lowly goblin when you field them in huge numbers and that a hand weapon + shield is better. This makes sense to me. However, one thought did occur to me, this may be true under normal circumstances but what about in light of animosity? In a NG horde you will expect this to occur alot meaning you may be more likely to get charged- so the spears would be benefical in that case.
So as I don't really know much about WHFB what do people think; pricey spears in case of animosity, HW+shield for cheapness and save, or bows seeing as the save won't really do much anyway?
So the reason HW+Shield is generally prefered is that you should never count on your NGs to kill anything. Ever. If they get lucky, great, but your real strength comes from solid +5 static combat rez and something that can break ranks on a flank. As such the extra save from Hand weapon shield (which is even better when you throw in nets, basically another +1 AS against strength 4 or higher) you lose a lot fewer goblins than you might think.
Plus its free, who wouldn't want to field 500 night goblins in a 2000 point game?
A ratio of around 3 HW/S or Spear armed Gobbo units to each bow unit is basically what I run. HW/S gives an enhanced armour save and is cheaper than spears, but spears give more attacks. I run spears more often (4+ and 5+ aren't too different when you have 80+ models in 500pts).
Armies: (Chaos) Space Marines [1250pts], O&G [2250 pts], OK [1000pts]
