Was playing a game over the weekend against Skaven with a friend down my local store with my all goblin horde and was wandering if I could get some tips. I lost rather convincingly.
My list was:
2 night goblin shamans, one with the horn, the other with mad cap mushrooms and magic mushrooms.
night goblin big boss BSB with the raggety banner.
30 night goblins with HW+shield, nets and 2 fanatics
35 night goblins with spear + shield, nets and 3 fanatics
20 night goblins with bows and 1 fanatic
2x5 spider riders with musician
5 team squig herd
10 squig hoppers
2 spear chuckas
it was a 1.5k game. he had:
2 units of 30 monks
2 units of 30 stormvermin
6 or 7 units of giant rats
2 lvl 1 plague priests for dispelling
another character with a flail, i forget the rest of his equipment.
6 gutter runners which came on the table near my doom diver.
With the giant rats he was able to deploy nothing important by the time most of my army was deployed leaving my units facing fairly tough opposition. My shooting was largely innefective, seeing as his monks could not panic. The fanatics killed quite a few stormvermin but likely didn't earn their points which was no surprise for fighting skaven. The main problem I had was that I could not win a single combat against his equal sized units with superior fighting ability. The shamans didn't achieve much, seeing as I rolled relatively poor spells and were panicked off the board fairly early (mostly my fault, should have kept them out of the panic route of my hoppers. The squigs failed to achieve much as well seeing as skaven charge range meant they didn't get to cause much damage and lost to Static resolution.
Is the problem my list? Or did I use it poorly? I'm not totally sure why I lost, but being new I'm prepared to put it down to my own fault. What do you guys recommend? I realise taking orcs might help but my all goblin horde is a themed army so that isn't really an option.
I think your list is ok, the skaven army has quite a good list against goblins, in the end theyre cheaper than ours
the hoppers could have been used to destroy the gutter runners and then giant rats.
maybe your core can do better in combat with a few units of 30, standard, hand weapon+ shield, and netters
less fanatics and mad caps will save you alot of points, your goblins actually cost more than a clanrat, so a fanatic will have to kill hundreds.. no, thousands just to get back his 25 points
keep in mind you restrict yourself to goblins, while the opponent is using a more powerfull armybook, without restricting himself to half of the book.
I have no doubt a unit of orcs, perhaps even savage/black orcs with 2 choppa's will win combat against skaven core.
Warchief Diggah o da Bloodmoon Squiggahs
I agree with Digger, drop the fanatics when playing the skaven. The thing the fanatics can really help with against a Skaven army is the doom wheel and censor bearers the skirmished frenzied unit. Otherwise they just don't make back their points. I would ditch the bows and the spears, get up to 30 gobos full command, with hand weapon and shield. The squig herd is great for chewing up tough armored stuff. Maybe switching them for something else, not sure. I've used spear chuckers against Skaven, sometimes good some times not so good.
