Skarsnik, Warlord of the Eight Peaks
A Night Goblin Warboss
Other, as described in my post below
Hello, O&G players! My Bloo Moon Tribe has been languishing on the shelf for ages and I feel its about time to ramp these poor gobbos back up! I've been really struggling over two lord choices though and, seeing that the O&G forum has been kinda slow in recent days, I decided that we could discuss the merits and beardiness of things together!
So, I have a solely night goblin force, not counting the lads operating the warmachines (they are night goblins too, just sober ones). Now, as far as a general goes, there are really two options, as I see it. First, there is a named character that just happens to be cool-looking, has the highest leadership the mushroom-eaters have ever seen and brings some pretty nifty abilities to battlefield.
Opposing him is a guy that costs about 75% the points and has 1 less leadership. However, this guy has a set-up I'm rather proud of. With Sneaky Skewerer, he causes any 3+ saves to evaporate. With Tricksy Trinket, ward saves do the same. With Amulet of Protectyness, he gets what they would have had. Spiteful shield, though overshadowed by the amulet for protection power, adds a little punishment to the enemy's attack phase.
So, is it the big-based guy with leadership and abilities or the little guy who can fight chaos lords and win? Which would you rather run?
I personally stay away from named chars mainly for the reason that it doesn't feel like "my" army. I would go with the no named gobbo lord. It's your personal little dude please its cheaper. More points equals more gobbos on the battlefield. Thats always a good thing.
Green iz da' BEST!
Orkz is made fer' two fings! Fightin', and winnin'!
i voted skarsnik, because his special skills are a perfect match for the goblin army, hes exactly what you need. stalling the enemy (sneaky schemes) and a high leadership. not to forget hes got 6 wounds
other than that, i dont play special characters. Theyre lame
Warchief Diggah o da Bloodmoon Squiggahs
As much as a I hate special characters. skarsnik is the far more competative choice. His special rules put your opponent on the back foot from the very first turn. An this gives you just enough chance to pull off a win before you entire army panicks off of the board...
I voted for Skarsnik, mainly because I love the model and special rules so much, but your other NGWB does sound well kitted out. Might I suggest going up to 3K pts and playing both of them, with a BSB and/or suicidal Squig bomb, and 2 or 3 NG Shamans (more for magic defense). Of course all of this is said without any knowledge of your army.
My Armies: Orc & Goblins, Vampire Counts, Empire, Space Marines/Blood Angels, and Cygnar
As everyone has said, Snarsnik is a very competetive choice.
However, I'd always take a night goblin warboss for the fluff. If I'm going to get a lord, I think that a huge part of the hobby is making up the background, and the special characters kind of stop this.
Ah, the good old named character problem. ^_^
I've often wondered if Skarsnik is a push-over in close combat. He looks alright on the giving end, its the getting end I'm worried about. 6 wounds is all well and good, but with a base that big, I might be safer vs the chaos lord than up against his unit...
And, of course, I will be running both at 3k. Why wouldn't I? ^_^
Its so weird i was actually considering this myself and changing my character loadout for my night goblins before i seen this. =]
I normally take skarsnik, iv just got bored of him, and since i normally take a special character in most armys i thought id go for the warboss this time =]
Couple questions though, my warboss is kitted the exact same way as yours, although im tossing up the idea of kickin' boots as opposed to tricksy trinket. sure no wad save would be great, but im also looking at that extra +1atk, its tempting, probably be safer with trinket though, hmm.
Also, how important would you say the initiative 5 is? Because for ten points more we could take a normal goblin warboss (obviously use him as night goblin of course )
I'd much rather and feel happier with a general LD 8 as opposed to 7, so Im thinking the change of warboss statline might be better, but init 5 sounds just right to the ears doesnt it? =]
ld8 is hugely important in an army with crappy leadership pretty much across the board. trolls are a good choice for a night goblin army because they add a hammer punch, but you have to deal with stupidity - meaning a good ld is essential.
skarsnik's bound item is also awesome, as are his special rules, but you do pay more than you would a normal warboss for them. i am torn between the 2. will playtest my new 8th list with both skarsnik and the ng warboss. with the new rules on bsb, re-rolling panic, stupidity and everything else might mean that skarsnik is less essential in a ng army.
the model is fricking awesome though, which may be the reason i stick with skarsnik. bear in mind also the new magical armours and items - we could feasibly get a ng warboss with a 2+ armour save and 4+ ward save
