With there bring no more terror bombing and with the amout of artillery armys can have now and accsess to making units and charicters cause terror with the mask of EEE and wailing banner and fighting for space in there slots for other choises have these big guys lost there nitch in the O&G army. i personly think the answer is yes they just cost to much for what it is that they do now and with Wyverns fighting in the lord slot with warbosses and great shammans and giants fighting with the new improved trolls and doom divers i dont really see them serveing much purpose in the competive scene.
Since terror bombing only worked against a handful of opponents on competitive play, it's a buff to monsters as support unit. A giant should not win combat on is own by flanking a unit of 40 guys. However, he will break them when you have engaged them with troops of your own. The meta for the game will shift, and stubborn LD 10 fleshy giant is still a strong asset in an army that has trouble holding the line when things get tough.
Large target is no longer as crippling as it was, there is no more bonus to hit them.
I used my giant for the first time last night in the new rules against dark elves. He died turn 2 to a unit of crossbowmen, ranked 10 x2, even though he moved, fired 2 shots each and had long range, he caused 6 wounds. You can't beat 40 shots with these new rules. The game went downhill from there. lol
In my opinion: Giants are now reserved for large point battles, i.e. 3000+. In a 3000pt battle you could afford to take two doom divers and two giants; that being said, you would also have to reconcile not taking 10 common trolls or 7 river trolls for the same price +/-10pts. The benefit of taking the giants is that you'd have two of them, while only one unit of trolls (unless you wanted to forgo the second rank attacks of the trolls).
I wholeheartedly agree with wold_pack on the wyverns, and I'm working on incorporating mine into a 2000-2500 army list for the first time.
Yeah I can't see either of them being used in the new rules, 8th Edition was made to stomp on monsters and cavalry. There's to much shooting and possible magic for them to live long, especially when most of them are poorly armored. Granting 18" Leadership with a Wyvern isn't very good because it measn you're hanging back and not being aggressive with a flying and monstrous mount, so what's it doing? It also makes your General easier to kill because it can't take advantage of cover as easily and Orks don't have the defensive items of other armies, although the BRB has some nice ones.
Giants are good if you can get them there because Thunderstomp means they will get some kills, even if you roll a stupid result on the chart. I see them as more of a fire magnet, taken only so your other troops are spared 1-2 turns of shooting which is sometimes all it takes but he's not a game changer in terms of the actual fighting, more often than not.

Heres my proposed idea for my warboss on wyvern:
Black Orc Warboss
Shield, Armor of Destiny, Collar of Zorga
Thought about adding in Blade of Quarrel for the +2 attacks at 40pts, but figured that Armed to da teeth was good enough and would save some points.
Armed to da teef only grants an extra attack if on foot... otherwise you'll be gaining +1 str with your GW from being mounted... you may as well save points by making him a normal orc warboss and spending on those extra items...
Personally, don't see the value in my Wyvern... probably going to be appearing on ebay soon...
Great Weapon is +2 strength and Allways Strike Last, black orcs can get heavy armou aswell, but the cheaper orc lords can spend the points on scores of mighty cheap magic weapons. I'd still go for the shaman lord on wyvern.
I like Thunderstomp. If only i could find situations where the monster doesnt die before the stomps get through.

Yup, great weapons add +2 regardless of whether you're on foot or mounted. I still like the Ogre Blade though, since it effectively gives you the bonus for a great weapon but allows for everything else as if it was a handweapon (eg. you can get a shield, you attack in initiative order etc etc)
As for the Wyvern and Giant debate....Giants are cool, and one of the most random and fun units out there. I'd include one even though he might die in the first turn and fall on my general, because that'd be a story I could tell for years and years and years....
