I'm planning to mount a snotling "mascot" for my wolf riders and I'm trying to decide what to put him on that would be scale conceivable. My army is based in the Warhammer equivalent of the Asian Steppes (near the Chaos dwarfs) and I'd like to keep some sort of geographic realism- ie a mount from Eastern Europe or Asia -anything else would be eaten long before its arrival. Being from Canada, I have only a minimal concept of European and Asian wildlife beyond the charismatic zoo animals, so I need help figuring out a good mount.
Ideally it would be something that lives in either Europe or Asia, looks different than a wolf, could conceivably run as fast as a giant wolf, could realistically carry a snotling and is visually funny.
Ideas so far:
Fox: Pros: Visually distinct from a wolf, works with the geography, could conceivably keep pace with wolves and is a similar type of animal to wolves. Cons: Could be too small, not particularly funny.
Regular sized wolf (ie smaller than giant wolf): Pros: could surely support a snotling, fits perfectly with unit. Cons: kinda boring
Opossum: Pros: Hilarious modeling possibility of a retreating snotling carrying his mount since it is playing 'possum, visually distinct from wolves. Cons: not a native animal of Asia or Europe, probably too small a beast to support a snotling, would be scared of giant wolves and always play 'possum whether retreating or not, too slow.
Skunk: Pros: Also hilarious. Visually distinct from wolves Cons:Too small to carry a snotling, way too slow, and I don't think there are any skunks in Asia or Europe (correct me if I'm wrong)
Either the one man pump wagon,
or a small one man chariot in 2nd rank with a first rank wolve as steed.
I wouldn´t go for animals because a wolf would be boring and the others don´t mix well with wolves.
Thanks for your help
A hedgehog would also be hilarious with a pincushioned snotling.
I think I'll make a snotling swarm with a proportion exaggerated skunk, opossum and hedgehog and have a separate model for when they retreat (3 stinky snots, full of pins and carrying the opossum). It's too funny to not do.
For the wolf rider mascot I think a tiny chariot drawn by a young wolf would work so I can keep it as one rank, and someone has to train the wolf chariots of tomorrow. A pump wagon seems too out of control for this unit. If I had orcs in my army I would totally use a snotling-piglet with boar boyz or boar chariots.
perhaps a elk (bigger then wolfs and afraid of them), a sheep, reindeer, deer or a wolverine might work...
