Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm just starting into warhammer and have a 1k OnG army. I played my first game last night, and realize i probably need more range. My question is whats the point in using regualr goblins? It seems like night goblins are just better all around for the same cost. Is there something I'm missing?
Night Goblins usually have a lower Ld value. It's often just one point but in the middle ground of Ld that is quite important.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Goblins are better armored than night goblins. They also have a new unit, the skulkas, which are great and inexpensive. Cant waitto try them out. I like to field a unit of both goblins and night goblins (which always have 3 fanatics and nets ). Just to have variety.
Goblins have a higher leadership, but lower initiative. I prefer the higher initiative value, as my night goblins can use my lords leadership and re roll it if failed thanks to the BSB.

Whilst normal gobbos have access to Light Armour, they don't have access to nets like what night gobbos do... granted, nets work 83.33% of the time, but I'd take -1S of the enemy 83.33% of the time over an additional +1AS 100% of the time any day. My Night Gobbos have been stripped of their spears and handed the tips of them (hw + shield = parry save). I refuse to give them spears: I have to pay XX amount of pts to get 5 more WS2 S3 attacks?!?! Our survey says... NUR-NUR!
Super cheap gobbo unit of many, many ranks with hw & shield, nets, a standard and no fanatics, it lunges up the centre of the battlefield and charges the scariest thing it can and makes it spend 3-4 turns killing rank after rank after rank.... Lost count of the number of times I've said "congrats, you won combat... so I'm still steadfast on my Generals Ld with BSB in range... oh, they held... that's nice..."
The best uses for Goblins are:
-sacrificial casters to get off a vital spell at a vital moment (oh no, my level 2 went pop and took out 5 times as many points as he's worth...)
-flinging fellow goblins at the enemy (Doom Divah)
-chucking spears at the enemy (Spear Chukka)
-lobbing rocks at the enemy (Rock Lobba)
-sacrificing bodies at the hands/swords of the enemy (5 wide and 654984651467986898465165432134653213465432132416546441329946167 ranks deep to hold up an expensive enemy unit that should be wreaking havoc)
My fave Gobbo unit: 40 Night Gobbos, HW & Shield, Nets, Standard... 5 wide, 8 deep... 163pts
Under the new army book, wolf chariots are likely to become very popular... units of 1-3 chariots... fast and cheap, I plan on taking a unit of 2 down each flank... charges = 2D6+2 impact hits, so an average of 9 S5 hits with 10A at WS2/3, S3/4 still to come...
EDIT: Disabledmuffin: why not post your army list and tactics to get some constructive criticism and suggestions?
Latest edit: got new book now... nets ain't worth it! better off taking 15 night gobbos instead... Rock Lobba doesn't feature in my armies anymore either now it's a rare choice...

Too be honest, I have literally only played one game. As in i had my army spread out and had no idea what I was doing.
I played against a DE army with a hydra that destroyed pretty much my whole army. After doing some research it seems like those big units are much easier to kill with range. Thats why I asked about the archer gobbos.
I like the warmachines of an OnG army, is it a good tactic to use a significant amount of those? I was thinking i would have a couple of chariots (btw why are gobbo chariots getting way better w/ the new book?) to protect flanking. And a bunch of boyz/gobbos that would handle the brunt of oncoming attacks.
Finally, I want to use trolls, so I feel like i should have a BSB nearby. Now whats the best unit choice for a BSB, also should I have him attached to the trolls or just on his own?
Thanks for helping me out, once i played my first game, I have been constantly thinking about my army.
Personally i have used gobbo archers once or twice and they didnt do anything. I love using 2 chukkas, and 2 doom divers (for me, going to battle without spear chukkas and doom divers is like going to paint and not having a paintbrush). I used to also use the rock lobba, but since its now a rare choice and i need those points in the rare section, im going to substitute it with, well 2 more spear chukkas. But this is for a 2k army. For 1k, try the two spear chukkas and a doom diver if you can. 2 spear chukkas can do mroe damage than a points equivalent (almost) unit of 20 agobbo archers. As your army grows, so will the amount of diffrent and multiples of troops you can field.
Trolls re amazing, especially with the new rules and costing less points. No character, especially the BSB should be on his own. I like to keep him in a unit of 25 orcs, andhave the trolls nearby for the leadership rolls. Unless you are going savage orcs and basing an army around them, always use black orcs for characters instead of normal orcs. They are mcuh better and worth the points.
The more games you play, the more you will learn how to field your army. Here is a link to an amazing tactica written by the paint monkey. Ive been playing for 10 years and this helped me out a lot:

One thing you will learn as your army aproaches 2000 points is that you will not really have the option of being spread out. With orcs and goblins and their low leadership, spreading out is not the best idea. Keep them close, with the general in the middle. You need his leadership if you dont want to have an army that flees quicker than it showed up.
Post up your current army list, as well as any other units you may have or may be getting sometime soon, and we can see what we can do with it
Just a pointer:
With the new book the spears upgrade is free.
so you can choose between extra attacks, or a 6+ wardsave, but is doesn't cost you any points.
I go for the spears, because that's what my models look like (bfsp FTW XD)
Edit: For the trolls: you could always let a cheap goblin Big Boss or Warboss run naked with them(join the unit), just to get them into combat. A goblin Big Boss cc ability is about the same of the trolls, and he costs the same, but gives the unit leadership7, if you put im on a wolf/spider he wont slow the trolls down, and costs about as much as a river/stone troll. If you put him on a gigantic spider you get a hell of a unit.
