I have another question for you we-actually-win-with-orcs guys. Is there a clear answer to what should I take from the following?
- 5 boar boyz, full equiped, fcg, flaming attacks + Orc Big Boss on boar with 2+ as and Potion of Strength - they would work as monster- and nasty-killers, warmachine and archers hunters etc.
- 6 Trolls - enough said. In my army-to-be, I have two blocks of 30 Orcs and some BO, I could use some more fighting force, and with M6 and a rank, they could even flank a unit (not sure that would work with Stupidity, though).
If the answer is obvious, I guess it's the Trolls. But if it's not, then what do you think?
Change the boar boys to savage and use them.
I disagree with that - Savage Orc Boar Boyz are arguably one of the 4 worst units in our book. Frenzy is a crippling weakness for a flanking unit, their armor is too poor to prevent them from leaking combat resolution, and what do they get in exchange? The ability to wield low-Strength weapons while mounted? Give me a break.
The answer I would give you is the Trolls. Single-attack cavalry with one rank can't break anybody and can't kill most things, and you're dumping way too many points into them for them to be a throwaway unit. Monstrous infantry, on the other hand, smashes stuff, and can break people once you've smashed them enough. Just put in a decent Ld bubble, keep them away from fire, and you're golden.

Thanks, I suspected this, but it's hard to throw away your erstwhile general and his unit. And I will have to buy the terrible new models, unless I find some cheap Stone Trolls on ebay. But I imagine they will rock, until I forget about Ld and they wander off, stupid creatures.
A load of Trolls (six is good) close to the BSB can surprise an overconfident opponent who thinks they're going to just stand there and pick their noses. On the other hand the Riders are also dynamite and can be equally unpredictable. I prefer Trolls only because I've got the models and I'm not paying GW another penny for their crap.
Don't take my word for it however! Trawl the Orc threads and see what the others are saying.

It deffinatlry depends on what else you have in your army. If you have wolf riders/chariots etc then you probably wont need boars. It also depends on how big your army is.
If you want a stand alone unit of boars i would have a unit of 10, and if i can protect them or at least provide a distraction in some other form from a large monster say... giant or araknarorc spider or even mangler squigs, i would consider upgradeing them to big'uns. Thats the only way i would keep boar boys in a "competative army".
If however you want them cos you like the look/background of them then theres nothing stopping you keeping them. Just remember your army will not be at it full potential using them that way, and one good round of shooting from any unit at 10 strong could wipe them out in one go. I certainly wouldnt place a full command, magical banner (even tho it is cheap) and a character in the same unit.
Trolls are certainly the way to go. 6 of them 3 wide by 2 deep and sit them next to your bsb unit and near your general.
As for troll types, they all have thier benifits, normal trolls are cheap, stone trolls you benifit more from thier magic res than armour save alot of the time but against S3 having a 5+ armour save is nice with regen, and river trolls can be a pain to shift with that -1 to hit modifier. problem with last 2 is they are rare and cost a bit more.
I usually run my 8 trolls with a goblin lord on a gigantic spider. It always ends up being the unit that does the most work in my army.
