The gaming club i go to has started an escalation league so i thought instead of doing a realy nasty army i thought id go for somthing different. Now i did the NG spam in 7th edd, and the Orc army in Storm of Chaos, so i thought now would be a good time to to the army i have always wanted, which is common goblins.
I have already started putting together my big blocks of common goblins with shields and bows, and have 10 of the new Space Wolve wolves to start making into wolf riders all glued up, but i was just wondering if there was any solid common goblin combinations as far as units go. Is there anything i should deffinatly be taking?
all seem no brainers. But what about the other bits. Trying to stay away from NG units as good as squig heards are, and also orc units. Im looking at 1000pts to begin with so im also staying away from orcs if i can help it. after 1500pts i may begin adding savage orc units if people start bringing out cheese lists but for now no orcs.
It´s an interesting idea, because as soon as you discard night oblins, a lot of choices are suddenly gone.
Are you against forest goblin (counts as night gobs for example)?
One of the best options in normal goblins comes from the lord on giant spider. its more expensive than wolf riders, but it has some really good options while it runs over certain obstacles.
i would keep units of common goblins at reasonable sizes, 30-40+shield and have a goblin shaman near every goblin unit to have acces to sneaky stabbin for all units.
ive used the backstabbers, and they perform ok. they dont strike first against other ASF, and they dont kill anything with high armour. 9 attacks is alot, but with their weaponskill you will not score killingblows, unless you're in contact with a wizard.
The Giant works well i ntandem with goblin units.
about chariots: usually 2 is the optimal choice where 3 is a bit overcosted and wide to some players. If you can afford the space, you could deploy a 3-chariot unit down at your centre to provide some serious impact on whatever is in front of em, hopefully supported by a gobllin deep unit.

Its a good idea, if I was doing the list Id go for an artillery heavy army with spear chukkas, doom divers and rock lobbers, keep the 40-50 size goblin units, flanked by wolf riders, trolls, normal or river (see stone as more night goblin) the odd chariot and a giant.
The variation of those units backed up by war machines could be a fun army list to play with
just wondering here. are you going to use the new plastic kit for goblin units= do you have metal ones maybe, or something else?

At least 2 Big Bosses and max Nasty Skulkers in every Gobbo block. This allows you to present a frontage of only characters to the opponent, which in turn means he has to allocate attacks against them individually and can't get at the squishy unit behind them. Artillery, a BSB with the Standard of Discipline, and a Gobbo Warboss are all very important.

Wolf chariots, are rather good, this time around . Just stupid-killy, in fact .
I would bring along a unit of 3 ( 1 special choice ), and maybe add a hero with a chariot too .
I wouldn't pass up pump wagons, either, unless you're strictly going with a "common" goblin list .
Thanks all for the good responses.
I think im going to finish painting up the goblin unit (made from the plaastic set of 20 (although i did get 25 in one box )), and finish making and painting the wolf riders and then leave them to the side for a bit so im not rushing them to keep in time with the league. On the otherhand it has given me a chance to build my 7th ed dwarfs list into an 8th ed dwarfs list, which is all there but needs painting and the odd cannon putting together.
I still plan on going to about 1000pts with my goblins, maybe 1500pt if they get to come out more often than i thought they would, any once my monserous arcanum bok arrives later this week from FW il hopefully find somthing nice to add from there to give the list a nice twist. It may even end up being the focal point of the list as i quite like the FW bassalisk.
Wolf chariots i think im deffinatly going to go for, but i might just take the new Space wolf thunder cav wolves (box of 3), put them on chariot bases and mount some goblins on them to represent the chariots.
Trolls will deffinatly make a feature in a unit of 6 as i already have 3, and i may have a giant or Curs'd Etin depending on the rules, or another monster from the book if somthing better fits. Maybe even the rogue idol of gork to shake things up a bit.
I had considerd some spear chukkas and would have gone for them if they hadn't made it so that on the roll of a 1 to hit you roll on the black powder missfire chart.
Thanks again all.
For the wolf chariots, I'd grab the wolf pack ( 5 ) box . You'll have enough wolves, for two chariots, and the odd wolf for a wolf rider or character mount .
The chariots themselves, will be difficult, since the SW wolves are much bigger . I was thinking of a converted base, with rocks and such to raise the chariot, so it looks like its barely holding together behind the wolves running at full speed ...
I'd avoid spear chukkas too, as bolt throwers took a hit in 8th .
Just my waffling .
