I'm a 40k player who wants to male the leap into the Fantasy world. I've been going through all the armies trying to find which ones interest me the most.
I considered High Elves, but the low T ans S as well as being expensive in points has turned me off.
I then thought of Brettonians because I've always liked Aruthrian mythology. Sine Warhammer is such a drak and grim battletorn fanstasy world, I like how the Knights represent the last remnants of purity and hope. One problem. I hear the army is very very easy to use. Just run and charge. That's it.
Then I went over Orcs and Goblins. These guys rock. Even if you lose you still have gun. The biggest turn off got me is the Horde mentality. I can't stand painting that many models even if I really like the army. I'd rather play an army that is expensive in pounts per unit, but each unit is powerful.
A friend of mine explained that I may want to check out Grimgor's Ard boyz. So I did. The list was exactly what I was looking for. I get to use a lot of what I like best in the Orcs and Goblins army book. Black Orcs, Giants and Ogres! Also, since many of these models cost a lot of points, they are not going to be a swarm army. On top of that a lot of them have good LD as well as good CC stats. Sure their initiative is slow, but everything is is great!
My biggest question is, What do I need to start?
The rulebook, Orcs and Goblins, and Storm of Chaos? Also, what if I want to use Ogres? Do I also need Dogs of War or Ogre kingdoms? If so, having to get that many books is kind of rediculous...
If you want to go green and paint as few models as you possibly can, then 'Ardboyz is probably one of your better options. With the upgrades to big uns and black orcs becoming available to you, your models points costs shoot up considerably - which means fewer to paint.
For starters, you will need both the O&G and Storm of Chaos army books... and if you want to field ogre Dogs of War, then the Ogre Kingdoms book will be needed as well! So a lot of initial outlay I guess, but this army can be one of the most deadly out there - absolutely all of my friends groan when I say that I'm field my Ardboyz - they know they're in for a hard fought battle... or more likely a plain old greenskin-style pasting followed by a BBQ!
As for starting models, grab 2 boxes of orc boyz (kitted mine out in choppas and shields only), grab the grimgor model to act as your boss, and then have fun selecting the rest as they will form your special / rare choices. For 500 pts, a boar chariot and 5 boar boyz do well, so that might be another option for you... but the allure of trolls and giants is very tempting also!
Anyway, good luck with 'Ardboyz if you start them, and lets hope to see your first Fantasy list posted up here soon!
The iron crowned is getting closer,
Swings his hammer down on him,
Like a thunderstorm he's crushing,
Down the Noldor's proudest king.
Under my foot, so hopeless it seems.
You've troubled my day, now feel the pain.

Groan! That means I will need the Orcs and Goblins book, Warhammer rule book, Storms of Chaos Book and the Ogre Kingdoms book!! Ouch!!
I may be ablet to get around this though. Anyone have the Army Builder Software? Does it allow you to choose a Grimgor's Ard boyz Army list? If so, I may be able to get around not having to buy the Storms of Chaos book since all of the restrictions and such will be represented in the software.
Yes, the army builder software has the 'ardboyz list. But you have to pay for that aswell. Using it and not paying is ILLEGAL!
And the rules in army builder are a bit dodgy. You can just print the 'ardboyz army list and use that, can't you? They still have it downloadable on the GW site. That'll save you the money from storm of chaos.
As for me, I'm not gonna waste money on OK army book when I'm just gonna use one unit of bulls in 4000 points! I'll just ask a friend about them and remember it, or something
All of the Storm of Chaos armies are available in a PDF format from the Games Workshop site in Australia, pretty sure they aren't in the UK. That will save you £12 for that book
The ard boyz list is good but can get expensive if you want to use lots of black orcs, just due to the cost of the models in financial terms. And you will need to make yourself a good effigy of Gork, as those things are cool.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
I've seen black orcs made out of orc and old chaos warrior sprues, so they don't necessarily have to be expensive.
That could work. No good to me though, I already have 40 of the metal ones. I love my black orcs but am still to actually play an ard boyz list despite it looking great. The idea of a greenskin army with no gobbo's just doesn't quite feel right
