In a 2000 point army with a center made up a a 30-man Orc Boyz unit, 20 Black Orcs, and 20 of Ruglud's Armored Orcs, how should I disribute the following units to best guard my flanks?
1 Pump Wagon
10 Wolf Riders
8 Boar Boyz
20 Night Goblins with 3 Fanatics
I plan on putting my Black Orc Warboss with the Black Orcs, and having either two Night Goblin Shamans or one Shaman plus an Orc Big Boss on a Boar to ride with the Boar Boys. I need help determining the best deployment of these units on the flanks. I realize that different armies might require different configurations, but in general, how should I split this stuff up on the flanks?
Thanks for the help.
For flank protection you could put wolf riders at one end and boar boyz at another. The 20 black goblins wouldn't do well as you need 40 or 50 so you don't get shot and then run. A pump wagon is would be too unreliable (but what really is in an orc army :p ) to guard a flank. Though a giant would be a pretty good but would be put to much better use by being in your main battle line looking scary and having a good charge selection so he can earn back his points. But in my games I usually use a big unit if wolf riders or a bigger unit of regular boyz with shields to be simple, cuz they do just as well.
Boar boys should never be guarding a flank! They do their best getting stuck in an providing hard hitting attacks. In addition a unit of 30 night goblins with or without fanatics will provide enough protection. Most opponents automatically assume they have fanatics and steer clear. A unit of 30 with the pump wagon next to it is fine, that's what i use. A giant on the other side is good also, set up with a unit of boar boyz it will function more of a sweeping flank than protecting flank.
I wouldn't use 20 ruglad's. In that amount your front line is either too little or too exposed. Only the front rank can shoot, and they'll be moving a lot so they won't be able to shoot the crossbows. I would use another big unit of regular orc boys instead, and maybe the bear minimum of Ruglad's if you really want to use them (i like them, they are fluffy, and if deployed right do good things!)
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
i would go fo the giant as it has plenty of wounds, and at the side it won't be targeted by as much arrow fire as it will be directed at the bulk of the force in an attempt to break a unit or two. also its higher speed means it will get towhere you need and will be ready in time for the general charge.
Have you thought about putting Ruglud and his boyz on a holding flank and deploying the boar boyz in the centre? Rugluds boyz can then sit there with their crossbows shooting and shooting and still then form up to prove an effective combat unit. They are less likely to get shot up to badly with being toughness 4 and having heavy armour, and Ruglud himself is no slouch in a fight.
