I just invested in some trolls. I have 7 and I can't get them to do ANYTHING.
I have tried as one big unit of 7 and two smaller units 3 and 4 but I cant do anything. They fail stupidity all the time and thats even when i'm 4 inches from black orc general. When the do pass they show off by passing on 4 or less so was stupid to put general near, granted this is pure poor dice rolling. My other problem is that I cant win combat with them. I cant seem to do anything, I always loose combat. I have only used them in 2 games so far both using grimgore's 'ard boys and was just looking for tips to make them as fearsome as they look.
So any overall tips will help. Cheers.
Because of their stupidity problems and low weapon skill, i would recommend using them only in conjunction with other charges. A ranked unit of goblins could help add up the combat bonuses. Or they could make an orc big 'uns or black orc charge even better. it also depends on what kind of troll you have. do some trolls still have the vomit attack? that is pretty good against heavily armoured troops, and though you only get one per troll, it pretty much means one kill. so knights really have nothing to counter that. of course, you can't take the charge, they would have to get the attack first. good luck getting that, i guess.
I also think that seven is too much to group in one unit. I think that a unit of three is enough, MAYBE four. You don't have enough to get a rank bonus, and they are really pricy for a full unit of 7. As for the failing of the leadership tests when near your general, the only suggestion I have is throw away your dice and get new ones. Maybe a rabbit's foot?
They can never really take on full, ranked units (except maybe gobbos or gnoblars), so use them only against skirmishing units or scouts, or in conjunction with another charge.
Also, two games might have just been bad examples. You need to give them more chances. It took six games before I saw the point of taking a Monolith (sorry, a 40k example, but my best one).
Trolls make a very good flanking unit and are very effective against heavily armed troops because of the vomit attack. Also river trolls are great as your enemy is at -1 to hit them due to the smell :w00t:
I wouldn't take more than 3 or 4, 7 is very expensive for a unit that will fail a couple of leadership tests a game. Having a big boss on a boar in the unit keeps their leadership a bit higher and alos gives them a bit of oomph in combat. It also means your army general is able to do whatever he likes elsewhere on the field.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
cheers for the advice. Didnt think of orc on boar with them. The only reason I have 7 is coz they are all conversions from an ogre box. Got the idea from another post on this site.
I use my stone trolls in every game i can. I have found that where ever my warboss or biggest orc (most likely borgut) i deploy them right next door for baby sitting purposes. This usually ensures they will not turn stupid, and also makes an excellent counter charge unit to protect a unit of Orc Boys. Combined with Borgut its very nice since his boys get automatically upgraded to big uns, and the Trolls benefit off leadership 9.
