In an attempt to try and understand my boyfriends love for Warhammer I agreed to build my own army and play him in a battle... however my pride is too big to let him decide my army.
I know he's having an undead army with blood dragons (?) i think. He said they are rubbish at proper fighting but they are good at magic.
I have chosen Orcs and Goblins because i think they are cute - sorry if that's the wrong reason! Anyway at the minute all i have is some night goblins, some Orc Big Uns (the ones with two weapons in their hands), 2 goblin shamen and 3 fanatics oh and a charriiot.
We are playing 1000 point battle. Any advice or tips on what else i should have in my army and what i need to upgrade them to would be much appreciated as i would love to beat him!
Well, to field Orc Big'Uns, you need to have the same some of models of regular Orc Boyz, so you should have two units of orcs. They can both be armed with 2 weapons. If you meant, rather, that you have a unit of Black Orcs, then you need another unit of "Core" troops like Orcs, Goblins, night goblins etc. Perhaps Wolfriders? Some fast cavalry might go nicely with the chariot.
It would be a good idea to get a Big Boss to be your Battle Standard Bearer.
Do you have a Goblin wolf chariot or an Orc Boar Chariot? If it's a goblin chariot, a second one might not be a bad idea, 2 goblin chariots only count as 1 special choice.
More orcs, more goblins are always a good idea. 20 orcs in a regiment, or 40 goblins, are good numbers to aim for, and the more regiments, the better.
Sizzlas Shiny Baubles, Glowy Green Amulet, and Mork's Spirit Totem could be useful magic items against a magic-heavy oponent. Hopefully, somebody who knows more about the Undead can give you some more specific advice.
Well first up if your boyfriend is using Blood Dragons he has got it wrong about fighting and magic. A blood dragon vampire is a killing machine, but they are penalised on magic to compensate for this.
Orcs and goblins are indeed cute, and fluffy and fun to play with. They are the most unpredictable army in the game in fact that makes them at times very frustrating to play against (and with).
Having fanatics and night goblins is always a good thing as they have the potential to cause a huge amount of damage to his units. Chariots are also good but make sure you keep them close to your general when they charge, undead cause fear and the chariots can use the higher leadership of the general to overcome this and charge.
Your troops are a lot cheaper in points terms than his so you will need to outnumber him and be careful what you end up fighting.
The shamans are great, some of their spells are lethal and will kill loads of stuff.
The most important thing to remember is that as cute and cuddly as gobbos are, they exist purely to get killed in droves so don't get too upset :w00t:

Keep the advice coming!
I might have made up that magic thing - sorry. I probably misunderstood.
Are wolf riders any good? And what magic specifically should i get before i start.
Are Stone Trolls worth getting? I just want some cos they look nice. I know this probably isn't in the spirit of the game but at least i'm trying...
Ok. magic wise you are kind of restricted to Waagh magic as the other schools of magic are off limits to the green dudes. The handy thing with waagh magic is it is very good at dealing direct damage at a decent strength. Spells like gaze of mork and brainbursta are good to get.
Wolf riders are very good indeed, they are fast moving and can act as fast cavalry which makes them very maneouverable. They can also flee from charges and rally relatively easily, this can potentially draw units away from your stronger units and give you more tactical options.
Stone trolls are resistant to magic (as well as looking good) and river trolls are more difficult to hit in combat (due to their wonderful smell). If your boyfriend plays blood dragons then maybe river trolls would be more useful as his magic will not be that great but -1 to hit them in combat makes a hell of a difference.

The trolls work wonderful against undead.( used them against my friend). Zombies and skeletons are struck at 3+ and wounded by 2+. They dont care about fear, and as lurch said, rivertrolls get almost unvunerable. If he happens to have terror-things then the trolls wont care cos of the stupidity. But keep the general close to em.
ahh you lot are so helpful. I'll keep posting for more help
There is so much to learn. I don't know where to start!
You could also try using what are know as proxies. That is, to fill out an army if you don't have enough models yet, or to try something out to see how you like it, find something else to suitably represent it. Maybe your boyfriend has some extra units, or you can use a square of carboard the right size for a base for monsters, vehicles or artillery. This way you can learn how different units work, and whether you like them, without paying $50 for it. Skellies (skeletons) are considered by some to be perfect for this.
Proxies is always a good way to try the units before you buy, I fully agree! Try imagine that you got this unit and see what happens if it would charge some undead unit. Then you will know what to do and not to do when you play. Look in the armybook and try to write your first list! Then you can prox with the models and play a little bit, or maybe send the list here.
Try taking the units you like, or it wont be fun to play.
I know i wanna be a greenskin forever!
Ok so I managed to weedle some more info from my bf. He has necromancers which i think why his magic is going to be so good.
Ok so i stole his list he has
a necromancer as a general and another one at magic 2
Blood Dragon Vampire Thrall
Skeleton Warriors and a skeleton captain
Dire Wolves and a Doom Wolf
Black Knights (with nightmare?)
and spirit hosts
but i think he's changing it slightly.
Your help so far has been so useful by the way. He's so amazed when i come out with stuff about Warhammer - he doens't know where i'm getting it from!
