The orcs and Gobs army that I run (still fairly new and being added to) with mainly focuses on CC, however as my other army is vampire counts, I have desided that I want to actualy USE the shooting phase for the first time ever (I don't use banshies). Looking at sub par shooting of gobo troops, and the metal models that arn't out yet for orcs, I want to add a warmachine, however I can't deside weather to take a stone thrower, a doom diver, or two bolt throwers. The doom diver appeals for the fun factor, the stone thrower would seem to just get more hits (it would be frustrating to get a direct hit with the doom divers and then roll a 1 for # of hits), and the two bolt throwers would seem to be most consistant.
Any advice from people who have actualy used these in a game?
You could easily go for a rock lobba and a couple of spear chukkas. The spear chukkas are dirt cheap and the rock lobba is as consistant as yer average stone thrower, both excellent choices i feel. I would steer lear of the DD catapult, although i must admit i haven't yet looked at the new O&G rulebook so am not aware of any changes
The DD works exactaly the same as a stone thrower (same misfire chart), but you can redirect 1D3 inches after scatter, and it inflicts 1d6 hits rather then useing a template. The bolt throwers seemed the safest bet, but why would I want the safest bet while useing O&Gs?
I'd go for a doom diver but that may be because I'm about to get one of them soon. I might be a bit biased. I just think that they really fit the whole feel of a gobbo army
mad, mad fun...
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
I play a Orc/Gobo army that i refer to deploying as the front line. Its based around the Dwarf mountain theory and works excellently against blocks of troops. Basically i always bring 4 blocks of troops to every game, 2 night gobo x25 both flanked by 2 units of orcs x20. The orcs are in the middle, the gobloins with fanatics on the ends. On a Hill have 1 rock lobba, and 2 spear chukkas. For support i bring 2 pump wagons. This set up allows a balanced army with a small amount of shooting. 1 Rock lobba hit ruins a unit, hands down. The bolt throwers always tag team block units. Basically i don't move on turn one. Most likely my opponent will advance straight at me, smarter opponents try to flank me, however i just turn my army to face on an angle.
I've begun to add the doom diver but i'm not sold on it, As it needs to pin point its less consistent the the rock lobba. I used to add a DOW cannon or Leadbelchers, however with the new book the DOW choices seem to be going, so i'm using the Doom Diver until i get 2 more pump wagons.

Cheap shooting- Spear Chukkas
Moderate shooting- Rock Lobba
Expensive/Awesome shooting- Lead Belchers
Spear Chukkas are great for a little bit of shooting. They don't hit too often, but they are cheap and do some damage when they hit
Rock Lobbas are more expensive but can dish out damage. A good hit can take out a lot of troops.
Lead Belchers are nuts. Their shooting is nasty and they also add a real cc punch.
This is how I run it-
500-1000pts, 2-4x Spear Chukkas
1000-1500pts, 2x Spear Chukkas, 1x Rock Lobba
2000pts- 3-4 Lead Belchers, 2-4x Spear Chukkas or 2x Rock Lobba
