Welcome to Librarium Online!
Do you folk use the Orc and Goblin characters? or create you own Lords? Some of the characters seem like a lot of fun. I think the only one I don't like is Azhag. If you create your own, what are some of your favorite item combos.
I used Grimgor Ironhide in a tournament at the weekend and he is just a killing machine plain and simple. He got into combat in 5 out of 6 games and slaughtered whatever was in front of him. I want to base an army around Gorbad Ironclaw as he has a very high leadership and I can use lots of normal orc boyz without them running away everytime someone says boo.
Skarsnik is the daddy, the new model is awesome and I have a load of night goblins ready for an army with him in.
I like Azhag, the only problem is he has to come on the wyvern so you have a target painted on him straight away. The stupidty doesn't help either.
When I make my own lord it tends to be a black orc with something like the ed kickin boots and the akrit axe as that way he has more attacks and can re-roll all of his misses. Then chuck him in some heavy armour and mount on a boar with a shield for a decent saving throw, and maybe the best boss' at for a bit of a ward save.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
Azhag is actually excellent to use once you get to the 3K level of play. Main reason is the death magic is excellent as the Wyvern basically lets you get to any place on the board to throw those spells around. In addition, his points are pretty nice for what wargear he has, stupidity hasn't become an issue for me.
Only other one i'm considering is Skarsnik for the leadership/abliities he brings as i have a Night Gobo horde.
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
i always make my own charectors in 40k i have o armay the tau and now im getting an orc army so i think ill make somthing like ***** the meanyface
I prefer to use my own characters rather than the ones from the army book, although that might change soon as the new Skarsnik and Gobbla looks imense.
As for equipment I don't really tend to go overboard with the magic items. I normally like to have madcap mushrooms in every unit which has fanatics, battle standad bearer normally carries badmoon on a stick. One boss has the amulet of protectyness and accepts all challenges on behalf of my Lord, and my shaman has the staff of sneaky stealin to help on the dispells.
I tend to prefer to use less equipment though as it allows me to have an even bigger horde.
It is interesting to hear that you use Bad Moon on a stick. BSBs are prime targets and with T4, 2 wounds and max 6+ AS, I can't see him lasting long. Have you had much success with this?
Never had a problem with him being killed. I use him in a 7 x 8 unit with a warboss and unit champion either side of him so he doesn't ever get challenged. The only reason I really use it is normally I can pass an unmodified rerollable break test on a 7 and its my main unit and so being run down really isn't an option.
If I can last a round or so I can normally get flank charges in with my supporting units and have broken much tougher units before such as 20 strong unit of chosen chaos warriors with Lord.
Although saying that I havn't played a whole lot of games using it so who knows if it might be a problem in the future, but for know it seems to work fairly well.
OK. If it works for you, great. My concern was the BSB being targetted in combat by R&F or characters not in a challenge. The certainly are high payoff targets for me and net good VP. Maybe I should give this a try. In the last ed I usually brought an Orc BSB with magic armour as opposed to a banner.
Speaking of goblins, have you tried the Great Cave Squig. It sounds interesting but I can't see it being that useful. After spending 100+ pts on the squig, a big boss and some items, the chances are he hops into a kill zone or jumps on a unit alone and gets beat by combat resolution. I guess he could go after warmachines or fast cavalry. Maybe teaming him up with a unit of squig hoppers or wolves/spiders might be an idea?
I don't think it'd really suit my style of play, I prefer to use all my big boss in units so that I actually stand a chance of getting a better combat res than 4.
Still saying that I'm very tempted to use either the new or old gobbla model in a conversion for a squig hopper which could be used as a giant squig butt I'd still probably just use him as a normal squig hopper.
In this edition if you play all goblins characters are at a premium and I don't really like th idea of possibly wasting one, maybe in games over 3000 points I would definitly consider it but in smaller games probably not.
I did try once (and just once, for a laugh at 3000) a savage orc great shaman, with the shaman weapon, ed kicking boots and the paint that gives +2 to cast when you reach combat. got into combat with his beastman lord and he thought he was all smart calling a challenge, until we killed him that is, the look on his face was priceless. "why has your shaman got 3 attacks?" "what do you mean because i failed my LD test i die?" "but... but... i'm really dead?"
tbh i wouldnt recomend it in normal games but it was a good laugh.
