Welcome to Librarium Online!
I played my mate's VCs today with my O&Gs in a 1000pt match. I got slaughtered. He kept on summoning shed loads of zombies out of nowhere with that innovation spell and all those fear-causing units either caused panic test after panic test or stopped me from charging him. I can't get anywhere near his general and his hero choices were generally too good (especially the vampire thrall).
So what do I do? What items do you suggest I take and what type of units? Standard boys and night gobbos don't seem to work for me.
The army that I played was: Black orc warboss; 40 NG with spears, f.c, nets and 3 fanatics; 30 NG with bows, f.c and 3 fanatics; 2x 25 orc boyz with dual choppaz and f.c
Frenzied troops ignore fear checks and tear through zombies and skeletons. Some boar boyz would really help. Fight fire with fire. OG have really strong magic, so make him pay with some shamans.
At 1000 pts, his general will be a soft necromancer. Get in there, and you can make the whole army crumble.
I agree. Shamans will also get you some much needed dispel dice. You want to stop the summoning spells from going off. Also, look into the "Horn of Urgok". You get the +1 to leadership, every bit helps, although it won't bother him too much.
Otherwise, try to work on your tactics. Set up to charge him on the flank, while a first unit holds his up the front, to negate the charge. Goblins are good to hold the charge if you give them spears. Just keep them near the general and sound the horn and they should be fine.
Here's a fun tip. Vampire Counts win by getting into combat with large numbers and then outnumbering you so you'll run when/if they win combat. Take large units to keep from getting outnumbered. When the Vampire Counts get close, instigate the power of the Whaah! you may get lucky and get the few inches you need to get into combat (if the Whaah! moves you into combat, you do not need to take a fear test).
Otherwise, get a bit of shooting to dwindle him down as he approaches. Spear chukkas and rock lobbas are your friends.
Remember that you are trying to stop him from out numbering you. If you do, then you have the rank bonus and it makes it harder for him to win combat. And even if he does, you have less of a chance to run away. Otherwise, it's insane courage or bust.
I hope this helped.
If your enemy is worth anything he'll pack so many zombies that shooting at them would just be a waste of points. At 1000 points the general will be very weak. Focus everything on that Necromancer! If you have some hard hitting guys, get them in combat and target the Necromancer with any model that can strike him (as he has WS3 compared to WS2 of skelies + zombies, so you can strike him).
Once the general is dead, watch those zombies drop!
Another very nice unit choice against undead is a Giant. With Ld 10 and being Stubborn they will hold even the best Vampire Units at bay, and if you're really lucky ou will role the Pickup And... role, and you can just pick up the Necromancer and be done with him!
thanks for the help, guys. Some very useful advice
