All my ships are escorts!
I'm curious to find out how people feel about escorts. I've seen some posters talk about fleets containing none (!), and other people who love'm.
Personally, I field about 30% generally, though I'm trying to reduce this in our current campaign. When I originally got hooked on Gothic, my mate and I had a bit of an "escort arms race" with each of us fielding more and more escorts each game, which is why I have about 3 escort models per capital ship model. I am currently experimenting with small squadrons so that I can field them with leftover points during our campaign games, but in the past I have favoured large squadrons of Chaos escorts and using them a lot like very manueverable (but very soft) broadside batteries. We usually play about 1500 point games.
So, how do you use your escorts? What percentage of your fleet is made up of escort vessels? Do you have any favourite tactics for using your escort squadrons? Big squadrons or small?
I'm interested to see if our use of escorts is unusual, and if there are roles for them I haven't come up with yet.
40% (it's not in the poll ) of my 2k Eldar fleet is made up of escorts. The escorts are incredibly fast and very deadly, and combined with the Eldar movement rules they're excellent for moving in and crippling a ship and then getting well away quite quickly.
A squadron can easily turn out the same sort of firepower as a cruiser, so it's rude not to take them...:ninja:

It changes for me every game, but I can't say I've ever put down more then 30% of my fleet. For the IN, they are good, but they just can't stand up as long as the Cruisers can when you've got something just pounding on you.
Nights Justice Space Marines
Eldar Eth Kariel Craftworld
Spear of Kurnous - High Elf Expeditionary Army
well seeing as my current mainline fleet is DE almost the entire fleet is made up from corsair class escorts.
10 escorts to my two cruisers actually...
in my imperial fleet i have dauntless to do that job anyways. go figure.
spambot kill tally: 79
[16:19] <@Alzer> Arky's right though
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> I know he is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.

Hmmm, just a few in the chaos fleet because the cruisers are awesome.
Shedloads in the ork one because the capital ships are not good, and its more fluffy.
My answer to such a question would definitely be "it depends what fleet I'm using, and who I'm playing against".
For example, for my Chaos fleet, I try to spend the majority of my points on Cruisers as I find them to be the most useful part of a list. Therefore I tend to take 2/3rds of my points (ish) as cruisers with that fleet. Its similar for Imperial, unless I'm facing an Eldar (or DE) opponent, then I max out on Swords as they come in immensely handy in those fights.
Eldar, on the other hand, I run with mostly escorts. Usually I only take one cruiser in a fleet, and thats a Shadow for the sexylicious Eldar attack craft it provides. The rest of the fleet is completely made up of escorts and they maximise the Eldar strengths and help minimise some of the limitations.
As such I find it hard to pick a single option on the poll, but the thread itself should provide for some interesting reading:yes:.
BTW, thanks to all for the comments so far.
I am relatively new to BFG, but a friend just passed down his Chaos fleet, (fun fact-I play beasts/hordes of chaos, chaos space marines and now-I own a chaos fleet...) anywho, I read through his rulebokk while mine is being mailed and my list is made up of about 30% of my points to escorts, split between idolators, iconclasts and infidels-each assigned to support 1 capital ship
Asking for suggestions without knowing what you're planning on doing is like asking a blind man what color shirt matches your eyes.
I use a ton of escorts in my ork fleet, they are very nice compared to the cruisers, and help compliment my battleship
escorts are underestimated. for the price of a cruiser, you can have something faster, with a greater single punch, more manouverable, and you can actually make escorts last longer than a comparable cruiser, as an abeam escort is much harder to hit, and they easily outmanouver larger ships. an escort swarm army would be tough to handle. 2k game?
eleven squadrons of six, battery strength 18 iconoclasts anyone?
too many, gave up counting. rough estimates of 10% even steven, 25% omg i lostorz! and 65% PWNED NEWBS! ^^
<Tossy> Crons are freaking invincible!
