    Size of the ships

This isn't really a question about Battlefleet Gothic itself, but this is probably the area that has the most knowledge in this field.

About how big would one of the ships be if it existed in real life? This question has been nagging me for a while, since some fluff I have been working on requires a Space Marine Battlebarge crashing into a city, and I have no idea how much of the city it would take out.

From the assorted artwork I have seen (and the BFG models themselves) they look like they are of decent size, some would be about the size of a star destroyer from Star Wars, where some could be as small as stuff from Star Trek.

So, if anyone could give me even a ball-park estimate on how big an average ship would be (or a friendly comparison to any other popular sci-fi material) it would be much appreciated.

For a start, have a lok at the thunderhawk gunship models. They are tiny, a bit bigger than a 40k head. Then look at the thunderhawk forgework model if you don't know them and compare to human sized things. So yeah, the ships are pretty big.

Depending on how much research you want to do, maybe have a look at Firewarrior (the game). It has some nice cutscenes and levels involving a Tau ship and an Imperial one.

I always imagined the Battleships to be around the size of star destroyers, probably a few kilometres long. I thought there was a reference to size in the BFG rulebook, but I either imagined it or couldn't find it just then.

They are just big. If you look at artwork and stuff you can get a good idea. I'm guessing if a Battle Barge hit a city the city would be gone lol.

From a bit of fluff in an old White Dwarf, an imperial cruiser is 30km long

    Thats right, 30km.

The attack craft are (from First and Only) 200 paces (ish, for an interceptor) nose to tail, bombers are a bit bigger. So the attack craft models are nowhere near to scale, but if they were you would need a microscope to play.

Wow. I had a feeling they were big, but I had no idea just how big they really were. Thank you all for that info, I think I might just have to re-write the fluff, since the entire city would be leveled by the crashed ship.

Heh, yeah, and since its the stem of the base that represents the size of the ship in-game the explosions of, say, plasma drives are hundreds if not thousands of kilometres in radius, so once its crashed, dont have it blowing up...

I've always had an issue with the size of the ships.

    30 kilometers is just ardiculous.

    http://www.merzo.net/index.html

Check that out, looks much better IMO. Puts a Retribution Class Battleship at 7.5 Kilometers. That just puts things at a much more realistic size.

The page that has the Imperial Ships also shows scale Empire ships from Star Wars. Both are galactic spanning empires with innumerable resources at their finger tips. Imperial Ships are still larger then the Empire Ships, but not nearly to the scale suggested earlier.

30 KM isnt THAT rediculous, consider.

    1) Small ships in the warp get eaten by tentacled nasties.

    2) Each ship needs to be able to carry multiple regiments of troops.

    3) Weapons need MASSIVE power supplies so ships capable of mounting weapons worth a damn need to be big enough to mount power plants also worth a damn. 41st millenium technology is, frankly, pisspoor so compact beweaponed ships dont happen.

    4) Big ships rock. I mean really, if you could own one ship would you go for a corvette or the Bismark?

    Thought so.

    30 Kilometers = 18.75 Miles.

USS Nimitz = .3 Kilometers. Crew Compliment 5000+

Todays standard Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carrier can carry a full 40K Regiment (as well as 90 aircraft) and it's only 1/100th the length of a supposed Cruiser.

Power Supply? One of our OLDER nuclear weapons today has the capability of producing 84,000,000 megawatts apon detonation (By the way, a good portion of Japan is powered on only 1,350 megawatts). You mean to tell me that in 38,000 years, they haven't developed the ability to outdo that? That shouldn't require 5 square miles of space.

And whether it's cool or not... when your building a ship that will or will not strip an entire planet of it's resources, for the sake of cool...
