Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm trying to write some fiction and thus need to get an idea of the vital statistics (crew sizes, length, weight) for certain Imperial vessels. Specifically the Avenger-class grand cruiser and the Dauntless-class light cruiser.

Good luck. It seems everytime a ship is mentioned in a Black Library novel, the author gives a brand new thought up number.
There is no set dimensions to any Imperial Ships. I'm particularly a fan of the sizes that are used here though. They seem much more realistic then some of the larger estimates.
Jeff Russell's STARSHIP DIMENSIONS
It shows a Retribution Class Battleship to be at 7.5km long, while a Cobra Class Destroyer is at 1.5km long.
Compaired to the actual size of the ships in BFG, their pretty much to the same scale. I don't actually own any Grand Cruisers, or Lunar's, so you'll have to do some measurements on your own and do the conversions.

Keeping in mind that in the Imperium, anything that can be done manually instead of automated is done so.
So when those giant gun batteries turn it's not a machine doing it, it's a hundred men pulling a giant chain turning it (though they possably recieve some form of machine amplification).
In the Imperium suffering isn't just allowed, it is encouraged.
I like that Starship Dimension site, and those numbers sound about right to me. If anything, possibly a little on the small side of things. In recent years 40k has taken a turn towards the realistic and tech... in the old days of dark lore and gritty Brit sci fi, I think things would have been bigger... but time and the style of the fiction has changed and these days those numbers sound good.
Like most GW fluff though, very little is fact, it's almost all hyperbole or biased reporting. So whatever you write is okay (as long as you leave the relative ship sizes intact), as is anything anyone writes that disagrees with you. That's 40k fluff for you. Even when it contradicts, any source is as accurate as any other in GW's eyes.

Making Sisters of Battle into Women of Battle
Give a Rep Star if you like what someone said. Especially Me. I'm an unabashed Star whore. Blame my 2nd grade teacher and those stupid good behavior stickers. I'm just conditioned. I'm the Pavlov's Dog of stars.
