Has the starter set for BFG been discontinued? I was thinking about trying it out, and thought it might be a good way to convince my friend to join me. Also, is the current version of the rules (Armada, right?) the same set that is free downloadable? or is that the older edition? (I was under the impression that the rules changed when they introduced armada)
Armada doesn't contain the basic rules, it contains extra fleets and a few extra rules. The main rulebook has most of the rules. It is more up to date online than the hard copy book now, since they've done updates, but its still good to have the book.
As far as I know the starter set is still being made. Where are you from? I know you can't get it in Australia anywhere, should be available in UK and US. It is a fantastic way to start the hobby, excellent value that contains all the counters you need, the book, reference sheets, roster sheets and a whole bunch of cruisers to start small battles. I strongly recommend it if you are starting out.
The starter set has been discontinued by GW/SG. Ebay is your alternative. Only the rulebook is for sale at GW online store.
The online rules are exactly the same as the printed (new) rulebook (since 2006). Online you can find rules for the Terminus Est, Rogue Traders, Craftworld Eldar and Adeptus Mechanicus. These have not been printed in any book.

from what i can gather yes the starter set has been discontinued as you can no longer buy it from the online store in the uk.
this i find a great shame as it provded you with all the countersnd rule book with ships for great value for money a pity though i hope they reprint/make this box but i dout it
By the way, I checked out some B.F.G. site online that claims that the starter set is being re-issued. I couldn't find a date stating when this had been posted, but does anyone know anything about such a thing?
