The Falchion is presented as an alternate to the common Sword class in the fluff. However, gamewise, is there any real reason to take them? The loss of a point of firepower in exchange for torpedos is the only difference, given identical point costs and stats, and doesn't seem like a fair trade. What do you think?

I like the Sword better, I get all the torps I need from my cruisers and escorts don't pack enough weapons to diversify their loadout, they should specialise in one weapon set to get the biggest punch they can from firing as a squadron.
The Sword also has an extra turret.
I suppose it all comes down to just how much you need an extra few torpedoes.

My friend uses a squad of both, and too be honest I really don't care about the piddly 1 torpedo each. They are sort of an all around unit, and perhaps if you massed them it could be worth it because they would have enough torpedoes to matter and their batteries are pretty decent.
the sword is far superior!!!

Swords and Falchions don't fulfill the same role in IN fleets. Swords are an offensive weapon that tends to act ahead of the rest of the fleet, either alone or with a Dauntless CL. Falchions are a defensive escort type meant to travel among the larger ships in order to mass turrets and remove large torpedo waves. A single torpedo fired at a salvo of 6 or 9 is much more useful than single torpedo fired at an enemy ship, or an extra point of firepower.
but if you want a torp boat, the cobra is far superior and cheaper and faster.

<Tossy> Crons are freaking invincible!
I have a 2000 point fleet with 6 falchion escorts, i havnt really had a chance to test them out in a large battle yet, but i have had a few mini-skirmises with two cruisers and the falchions with my friends, they work quite well as bait. For one, their looks/stats/numbers in this battle seemed to scream to my opponent 'priority target' and so were chased after by his fleet. because of this disctraction, i was able to win the battle.
Over all, i think the falchion is a better looking model out of the two, and even though it sacrifices a turret and stg of WB for torps, its still a good little ship to use, especially in numbers, as with my mega-squadron of them. just think, stg 6 torpedoes, and stg 12 WB from this squadron of 6 falchions. quite the power. anyway, i think the falchion better fits the IN 'character', for one, it looks more like their cruiser and battleship counterparts. Here are my falchions, Red wing and White wing. The two pairs of sister cruisers with the red and white prows are also part of the wings.
