I dealt with Tau for the first time (well actually a friend of mine did usindg Dark Eldar).
They played 1000 points game.
The Tau player fielded 3 battleship capable of launching 8 (I repeat bombers per time.
The game was won by the Tau player, being the DE one unable to deal with all those bombers.
So my question is:
how is it possible to deal with such a large amount of bombers?
I play SM and my cruiser can launch only 2 thunderhawk, so they will be outnumbered, therefore I don't see a chance to beat Tau with my SM fleet.
I thought a rush could be usefull but Tau can use Orkas escort gunship extremely cheap and quite effective (25 points).
What is the weak point of this fleet?
Any suggestion is more than welcome.
Thunder, while I personally play as the Imperials in my games, the one true weakness that plauges the Tau is their lack of hit points and that their weapons are relatively weak. One of the truly effective tactics to deal with the Tau would be to close as fast as possible with the cruisers of your choice( lunar and tyrant for me) and open fire on them, on lock ave on if at all possible. Since the Tau have so few hit points and shields in most cases they will brace for impact. This will not only halve their bomber/weapon abilities it will also allow you to attack with near impunity since their weapons(weak to start with) are now at half strength. Hope that helps.
Hoorah! 101st Airborne
I played a game against Tau using Space Marines fleet.
Actually I have to say I didn't play that well.
The game was 1500 sized, and both me and my friend are still not that used to BFG rules, and quite often we forgot some rules , next time we'll play a 1000 sized game.
However, the game showed me that your conclusion are quite good Atlen.
Only do not underestimate Tau "Hero" class cruisers.
This sip is equipped with several lances that have the maximum strength on the front arc of fire and two shields.
Tau player tries to keep its battleships that are actually ordnance carriers far from your ships and use their huge amount of bombers to destroy "for free" some cruiser.
I would suggest to use manouverability (as use said), to get close to them as soon as possible, and use escorts equipped with lances and/or torpedoes to destroy their "orca" class escort (extremely cheap and deadly) and their Hero cruiser that are a good close escort to their battleship which are usefull only for their launch bays.
Implerials have nova cannon which is a good option to attack from long distance.
I'll keep you informed about the next matches I will play .
I'll try both SM and Imperial navy.
Keep the cruisers in a blast marker and they can't turn! Get escorts in behind them and boom! To counter mass bomber waves launch single fighter groups. One fighter can deal with an entire wave of bombers!
However I realised we used ordnance in a wrong way.
Actually few fighters can stop those swarm of bombers.
It is impoirtant to field escort with two turrets if it is possible (I use imperial navy and/or space marines).
