    Newbie Imperial Cruiser list 1000pts

Tyrant Cruiser with Dominion Upgrade 270pts
    -Fleet Admiral +1 Re-roll

2x Lunar Class Cruisers 180pts each

2x Gothic Class Cruisers 180pts each

    Total 990pts

Hi I've never played BFG before, but I definitely want to try and like the Idea of an Imperial gunboat fleet, so no carriers and minimal escorts. Is this a decent idea?

For the list I would try and pair a Gothic and a Lunar together, with the Tyrant either roaming or joining one of the groups. Should I squadron the Gothic and the Lunar together or just leave them independent but supporting each other. I haven't bought any models yet and wanted to get an idea of a good list before investing the cash.

p.s. If any one wants to play on vassal I'd love to try.

    cheers

    Hi,

nice start. Though without a carrier you're in for trouble.

I'd advice on ditching the Tyrant and getting a Dictator instead. Drop the re-roll.

    Or a new approach:
Fleet Admiral + re-roll (on Dominator)
    Dominator
    Dictator
    2x Gothic
    5x Cobra or 4x Sword

Is there any way to minimize vulnerability to attack craft without getting a carrier of my own, or is it pretty much necessary?

Also I have read mixed reviews on torpedoes vs Nova Cannons. Do you think not having all torpedoes is a decent tactic?

    thanks

Basically, the only (reasonably) sure way of repulsing attack craft is with attack craft of your own. Speaking from experience, the turrets on an average IN cruiser will manage to account for one squadron of attack craft. Obviously this will go up if you have other ships in base-to-base contact, which can add their turret values to that of the attacked ship - but this will leave those ships undefended against further attack. To which end a carrier is (pretty much) a necessity.

However, assuming you would like a gun heavy fleet, I would like to suggest my own alternative fleet list:

    Mars Class Battlecruiser - 270
    Fleet Admiral - 50

    Lunar Class Cruiser - 180

    Lunar Class Cruiser - 180

    Gothic Class Cruiser - 180

    Firestorm Class Frigate x4 - 140

    1000pts total.

I agree with Horizon, in as much as the points for the re-roll would probably be better spent on frigates.

The advantages of this build are that the Mars has firepower equivalent to a Lunar, so it'll hold its own in a firefight, particularly if you squadron it with one of the Lunars. It also has a Nova Cannon, which makes it good in a fleet support role - hanging back to protect its carrier bays, while deploying fighters to protect your cruisers and taking pot shots with the NC and 60cm Lances. This leaves you free to squadron the other Lunar with the Gothic - this pairing will rip apart most light cruisers and will give cruisers a real headache. Your Firestorms could be used to augment the Weapons Batteries of the Lunar/Gothic squadron, pull in beind the fleet to hit crippled cruisers flying through your gun line or fly ahead of the fleet to protect you from incoming torpedoes/attack craft.

Of course, this is just a suggestion - Horizons suggestion has merit also and I'm sure there are a thousand other builds that would work for you aswell!
