Hey Battlefleet Gothic Fanatics,
Two days ago I discovered that the BFG rules are free for download. Now that I've printed the rules, read them, and browsed all post extending back about 6 months, I've discovered two things...The game seems like it will be very fun and the people who play BFG are extremely dedicated and fanatical about it!
But, although the rules seem very simple to me everything is a bit of a mystery on how to properly assemble a starter army that is well-rounded since I and no one around me have every played a game. Are there any sample fleet list for say 1000 or 1500 points for ANY of the 4 core fleets (Imperial, Chaos, Eldar, and Orcs). I was hoping to maybe pick-up a 1000 point list for any 2 of them so I can play with a friend. I realize this is a pretty general question but if anyone could point me to the beginners thread I missed on assembling a starter army that would great! Even another website that has sample list readily available would be nice!
Alright, so after a little more digging I've managed to put together a theoretical Imperial Fleet list for 1000pts( Credit goes to JaqhPanther at portmaw.com). Here is the List I'm considering for casual 1000pt battles:
1 Mars Battle Cruiser with target matrix (285 )
2 Lunar Cruisers (360 ) maybe one could be a Tyrant for +5 points?
2 Dauntless Light Cruisers with lance (220 )
2 Cobra Destroyers (60 )
Admiral (1 re-roll) 75
So this leaves me with getting a Chaos Fleet list. I'd like a balanced list as well that has all the trappings of BFG weapons and game mechanics in it, but I'm not necessarily making a list that is specific to destroying the Imperial force I've list above...a basic layout of the fleet I'm considering is the following:
1 Styx (275)
1 Devastation (190 )
1 Carnage (180 )
1 Murder, Despicable Ecstasy (170 )
3 Idolator Raiders (135)
Chaos Warmaster Ld8 (50 )
Any thoughts or comments about the Chaos Fleet. I notice in the ship section for Devastation Class Cruisers it says it has Port and Starboard Launch Bays that can launch Doomwings and Firelords...did they mean Swiftdeath and Doomfires? I don't see anything about Doomwings and Firelords in the Ships Section of the rule book.
Thanks for any help with getting me going,
Haha I think im in the same position as you no one here plays or ever has played BFG and since the rulebook and other info is free why not play it!
I am pretty sure that I want to get 2 of the armies and have about 1500 points each as of right now im thinking Chaos for sure than im tryign to decide between necron and eldar for my second. However im only about a quarter of the way the rulebook at the moment.
I just wanted to see what an actual list would consist of so i can get an idea of how much money im going to have to drop.
I am not even sure if this is where i shoudl be posting it seems that this thread is pretty vacant.
But would anyone have opinions on whether i should get chaos and eldar or chaos and necrons. mostly i will use the two against eachother to try and get my buds all interested and hooked!
sorry if this post seems completely random...
BFg is in my opinion the best game GW ever made. There are many fleet options and I've seen 1000 points Dauntless fleets which beat the crap out of heavy duty Battleship fleets. You have a plethora of viable options, although I would suggest to go into plastic cruisers first and take merely a few escorts for the start. Most ships presented in Armada or the main book are useful in various situations.
When it comesto Imperial ships, the dauntless is your friend for patrols (especially the bakkan pattern Enforcer - have a read through the bakkan fleet list bwefore you assemble anything). Lunar hulls in all their varieties are great - they make a nice torpedo line, but are rather slow.
When it comes to Chaos, you will enjoy Slaughter, Murder and Carnage as your prime choices. Devastation is one of the best ships in game and you can alternate between a storming fleet (slaughters) or a long range fleet (Carnage and Murder).
Always take Battlecruisers and Heavy Cruisers when you can. battleships are nic but shouldn't be used in small fleets unlesss you want the 'Bismarck' syndrome.
Remember that this game has no tournaments and as long as both players agree, you can present a ship as anything else, so feel free to assemble the ships in any manner you wish. i started with one plastic ship of each class and then got some escorts.
Remember to read Warprift - it's a great BFG-only fanzine with a huge amount of ideas.
And if you're lucky, there are lots of fleets to buy of ebay - I got a whole chaos fleet for 30 pounds!
